重拍喬治·庫克名作
1939年由喬治·庫克執導、克雷·布斯·盧斯編劇，由米高梅電影公司投拍的《女人們》在當時引起了相當的轟動，有評論這樣寫道：「喬治·庫克，這個好萊塢傳奇的『女人』導演啟用一大幫女性演員將克雷·布斯·盧斯的原著改編成了紅極一時的電影，這個故事緊緊圍繞一群疑心重重且相互杯葛的女性交際圈展開，上演了一幕在聯誼會上使名譽俱損的喜劇。有趣的語言和瓊·克勞馥的精彩出演堪稱經典，在喬治·庫克的導演下這部影片精彩不已。」
黛安·英格利什以前主要在電視界發展，是備受贊譽的情景喜劇《風雲女郎》的編劇兼製片人。1994年，她讀到了一篇關於喬治·庫克的《女人們》應該被重拍的評論性文章，就是這篇文章激發了她的興趣引起了她的深思。「我清楚地記得那部老版的電影，也記得當時看到有那麼多特別有名的女演員在一部電影中出現時的激動，最讓我覺得有趣的就是整部電影看不到任何一個男人的面孔。」黛安·英格利什回憶道，「但同時我也意識到這部影片里一些比較過時的觀點應該被更新。」就這樣，黛安·英格利什重拍上個世紀經典喜劇《女人們》的初衷便形成了。經過一番努力，這個願望終於得以實現，這也是英格利什的導演處女作。
與1939年的《女人們》比較起來，黛安·英格利什導演的新版《女人們》將會有新的時代特徵。英格麗什在反應女人們生活變化的同時，保留了原版《女人們》中對女人智慧、生活格調和時而缺乏禮貌教養的描繪。如果說喬治·庫克的電影顯示出他對當時社會中「都市女人」的憎惡的話，那麼黛安·英格利什的電影則更多的在強調現代都市女人浪漫、感性的一面，並站在欣賞的立場全方位多層次的展現了現代「多面夏娃」的魅力。
新版塑造獨立女性
新版《女人們》里的女人更加具有立體感。她們具有專業精神，個個都是本行當里的行家裡手；她們經濟獨立，精神自主，無論是已婚的還是獨身的，她們都能夠在自己的世界裡找到樂趣、保持進取意識並且懂得自我保護。新版以樂觀的態度和「以小見大」的方式道出了女人們的酸甜苦辣。
身兼編劇和導演兩職的黛安·英格利什表示，「新版劇本和1939版的《女人們》將矛頭直接指向了當時的都市女性，影射她們在男人背後極盡互相詆毀之能事，而要做到這一點，女人們的狡黠、很深的城府、難以置信的快反應和務實的智慧都被表露無遺……但我在構思新版電影時卻不得不避開這一點，因為我欣賞女性，以贊賞的角度來重新演繹都市女性，同時也想將原著所具有的精髓進行保留，比如女人的智慧和聰明。」
黛安·英格利什的電影里保留了老版電影的基本框架，圍繞已婚婦女瑪麗·海恩斯發現先生感情出軌這條主線展開女人們的故事，但黛安·英格利什將這條線延展了，把女人們的范圍擴大到了瑪麗的「姐妹淘」以及親人，並且交待了更多的問題留給我們反思：代溝、婚姻問題及性取向。
也許是用批評的眼光在挑剔喬治·庫克的《女人們》，黛安·英格利什重新塑造了瑪麗·海恩斯最好的朋友——西爾維亞·福勒這個人物的性格。在喬治·庫克的電影里，西爾維亞是一個徹頭徹尾的「八卦女」，喜歡到處搜集和散布小道消息。而英格利什卻把西爾維亞變成了一本頂尖雜志的編輯、一個樂觀的單身女性、瑪麗自大學以來的閨蜜。
根據自己的見解，英格利什解釋道：「我打算把這部影片改編成為兩個坦率女人之間的關於愛的故事。而不像原著那樣僅僅糾纏於瑪麗是否該與背叛她的先生和解。在我的版本里，我希望觀眾能更多的關注瑪麗是否應該與她的閨密西爾維亞和解，這個因為自己的事業而出賣朋友信任的人。」
1939版的《女人們》里有接近130個女性角色，還有無數貓貓狗狗被作為道具充實背景，但無論如何也找不到男人的背影。2008版的《女人們》依然保持了這個作風，不管黛安·英格利什對這部翻拍的電影動了多大手術，有一個禁區是無論如何也不能碰觸的，那就是不能讓任何一個男人的臉出現在電影里。

·在2006年，當時該片尚未敲定最後的主角，曾經傳言安妮特·貝南和烏瑪·瑟曼將分別出演片中的瑪麗·海恩斯和克瑞斯托·艾倫。
·傳聞莉莎·庫卓和安妮·海瑟薇在片中有所擔綱，但最後她們擬出演的角色並未在最後的腳本中出現。
·上世紀70年代，也有人想重拍《女人們》，並打算邀請簡·方達、芭芭拉·史翠珊、費·唐納薇加盟出演，但最終未能實現。
