而佛羅多此時已被獸人帶往西力斯昂哥之塔，山姆則下定決心要拯救他。甘道夫和皮聘設法阻攔正准備火葬的迪耐瑟，但他們救出了法拉墨。迪耐瑟在死前才意識到自己的兒子並沒有死去，悲傷而絕望的迪耐瑟在大火的吞噬下跳下了米那斯提力斯城牆。

哈拉德軍隊已經抵達了帕蘭諾平原，並且使用猛獁展開對洛汗騎兵的攻擊，騎兵損失慘重，此時安格瑪巫王也來到戰場，他先殺掉了洛汗國王希優頓，但自己也被國王的侄女伊歐玟殺掉。在剛鐸與洛汗接近崩潰之時，阿拉貢率領的亡靈軍隊在渡口登陸。

在魔戒被摧毀的同時，幾乎在黑門取得勝利的索倫軍隊瞬間瓦解，巴拉多塔倒塌，歐洛都因火山爆發，魔多化為火海。佛羅多和山姆險些喪命，幸得關赫的幫助，兩人被帶到瑞文戴爾，而佛羅多已神志不清。

在瑞文戴爾，佛羅多蘇醒過來。不久，曾經的遠征隊聚集在米那斯提力斯，參加阿拉貢的加冕禮。盡管任務已經完成，但佛羅多身體和心靈受到的創傷並未康復。新的紀元就要到來，而中土的精靈也准備離開中土，前往維林諾。

最終，佛羅多在比爾博、甘道夫、凱蘭崔爾等人的陪伴下離開中土，踏上了西方土地。在那裡，佛羅多身體和心靈上的痛苦將會得到治癒，自己也將安然地度過餘生。
