Every five thousand years, a door opens between the dimensions. In one dimension lies the universe and all of its multitude of varied life forms. In another exists an element made not of earth, air, fire or water, but of anti-energy, anti-life. This "thing," this darkness, waits patiently at the threshold of the universe for an opportunity to extinguish all life and all light.
Every five thousand years, the universe needs a hero, and in New York City of the 23rd Century, a good hero is hard to find.
One of today's most provocative and acclaimed filmmakers, director Luc Besson's works have captured the imaginations of filmgoers worldwide. His visually innovative style has marked the critically-acclaimed thriller The Professional, the exotic undersea adventure The Big Blue, the new wave thriller Subway and the seminal action film La Femme Nikita, the first major French blockbuster. Now, Besson teams with Bruce Willis, one of the most dynamic and successful actors of his generation, to take the science fiction film in a new and exciting direction.
Columbia Pictures presents The Fifth Element, a timeless story about love and survival, heroes and villains, good and evil, set in a strangely familiar yet intoxicatingly different 23rd Century.

The title of The Fifth Element refers to the four elements of alchemic Greek tradition -earth, air, fire, and water. Four elements gathered together to create the fifth one: life. Besson conceived of this energy -- the energy used to talk, to engage in sports, even to think -- as an actual, living thing that never disappears, but spreads throughout the universe and beyond.
Though the acclaimed writer/director conceived of the story while still a teenager, he was unaware that the concept of a fifth element -- known in Moorish traditions as "Akasha" -- is deeply rooted in ancient mythology. Besson remembers: "When my father came across Plato's writings on the subject, he came to me with the book and said, 'Do you know that your movie is a remake?' I read it, and was amazed to see the similarities between what Plato had written and what I had put into the script."
In The Fifth Element, Besson posits the question: what if an opposite form of life existed in another dimension -- one not made up of life-energy, but a dark, cancerous embodiment of all that is evil? "The energy of life, and this other, evil life-form, are opposites, like fire and ice," Besson explains, "and the more of this life-energy we create, the more it irritates and provokes this other."
In the 23rd century of The Fiffh Element, humanity has wandered out among the stars, spreading this life-energy, and further agitating the dark being. "It feels as if we are asphyxiating it," Besson notes. "It is dying because of us. It wants to fight back, and extinguish every source of energy or light --animal, vegetable, human. But it has its own limitations: it is isolated in another dimension."
The dark being's time to strike back occurs only once every 5,000 years when a doorway between the parallel dimensions briefly opens. "At the very beginning of the movie," says Besson, "we show that a way was once found to fight this entity, but the years have passed, and the way is forgotten. When our story begins, he is back, and no one knows how to defeat him."
The setting in which this heroic quest drama unfolds is among the most fully-realized fantasy worlds ever committed to film, and certainly one of the most unique. "We looked at all of human history," says Besson, "in order to come up with what we think is a very possible scenario for humanity in the year 2259, which is when the story takes place -- to be very precise, the story begins on March 18, 2259, at 2 a.m. What will the evolution be? How will people live, and think? And how will that be reflected in the world? It seemed very important to me to create for this story a world that people can accept as a real possibility for the future."
The result is a menagerie of weirdly exotic aliens: hulking, armored creatures with incongruously small heads called the Mondoshawan who, despite their imposing presence, work on the side of good; and huge, doglike Mangalores -- an army of mercenaries in the service of Zorg (Gary Oldman), the agent of all that is evil. The filmmakers also created imagery of a brave, new Earth that has never been seen before, along with an array of fantastically-imagined vistas on other planets and our own.
In the future, the polar ice caps have melted, the world is covered by water, and everyone is left to fend for themselves as scavengers in a grim reality. This is Waterworld, and you'll be glad to know: even in this harsh realm, the women still shave their legs.
The most expensive movie ever made (the final word is $172 million), Waterworld will be a true monument in Kevin Costner's career. Unfortunately, this film isn't going to have quite the effect something like Dances with Wolves had. The bottom line is Waterworld is a marginal film: always extravagant, sometimes entertaining, often preachy and ll--a pure formula picture.
The story is time-tested and painfully simple. Costner plays The Mariner, a lone drifter on the watery surface of the earth who talks about his boat more than Forrest Gump. Jeanne Tripplehorn (The Firm) plays Helen, the love interest and the protector of Enola (Tina Majorino), a child with a strange tattoo which just may show the way to the mythical paradise of Dryland. The obligatory bad guy is The Deacon (Dennis Hopper), a slave driver/preacher with heavy artillery that acts a lot like, well, Dennis Hopper. I won't be the only one to say, "It's Mad Max on water."
Of course, The Deacon wants the kid. The Mariner wants to protect her and falls in love with Helen. So for 134 minutes, The Deacon chases the trio, turning up over and over and over, always out of nowhere (ever try to hide on the ocean?), and always being thwarted by The Mariner. Basically, it's Costner trying to be a superhero, swinging around on a lot of ropes and blowing up everything else.
This gets pretty old after awhile, especially since Costner looks more concerned with what's for dinner than what's on the screen. The other problems are innumerable: it's hard to figure out where the story is headed, the bad guys act like members of a bumbling Keystone Coast Guard, and a number of effects are obvious digital fakes. There are a few bright spots, but it ends up being a passable story with lackluster execution.
All the hype surrounding this film has really spoiled what there was to enjoy. If you see it, you'll probably be trying to figure out where all that money went, too (I only counted about $100 million). It's too bad; you'll need that brainpower just to figure out what's going on.

Roman Holiday
Roman Holiday (1953) is a delightful, captivating fairy-tale romance shot entirely on location in Rome, and proced and directed by one of Hollywood's most skillful, distinguished, professional and eminent directors - William Wyler.
The film's bittersweet story is a charming romantic-comedy, a kind of Cinderella tale in reverse (with an April-October romance). A runaway princess (Hepburn) rebels against her royal obligations and escapes the insulated confines of her royal prison to find a 'Prince Charming' commoner - an American reporter (Peck) covering the royal tour in Rome. The story was reportedly based on the real-life Italian adventures of British Princess Margaret.
Wyler was known for other great films including Dodsworth (1936), Jezebel (1938), Wuthering Heights (1939), The Letter (1940), Mrs. Miniver (1942), The Best Years of Our Lives (1946), The Heiress (1949), Friendly Persuasion (1956), Ben-Hur (1959) and Funny Girl (1968). Wyler's well-crafted, stylish films that cover a wide range of film genres (family dramas, westerns, epics, romantic comedies, and even one musical) always included down-to-earth characters in real-life situations.
The film received a phenomenal ten Academy Award nominations for a comedy. It won a Best Actress Oscar for its under-experienced British (Belgium-born) actress named Audrey Hepburn - it was her first American film, although she had previously appeared in six European movies and on Broadway in an adaptation of Colette's Gigi. Another of the film's three Oscar awards, the one for Best Original Story was given to Ian McLellan Hunter. In 1992, a posthumous Oscar was properly credited and given to blacklisted Hollywood Ten author Dalton Trumbo, who actually wrote the screenplay. The third Oscar it received was for Best B/W Costume Design (Edith Head). The other seven nominations included: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor (Eddie Albert), Best Director, Best Screenplay (Ian McClellan Hunter and John Dighton), Best B/W Cinematography, Best B/W Art Direction/Set Decoration, and Best Film Editing.

The film opens in 2002 with Marni (Kristen Bell), an acne-riddled high school senior with glasses and braces, making a video about how much she hates high school, and reveals how she is tormented and bullied by other girls. Years later, in 2010, however, she is a successful public relations executive, recently promoted to a job in New York. When she flies home to her older brother's wedding, she discovers her brother Will (James Wolk) is about to marry her arch nemesis Joanna (a.k.a. Jay-jay) (Odette Yustman), the woman who bullied and tormented her throughout high school. When Marni finally meets Joanna for the first time in 8 years, Joanna appears to have changed, having become quite involved in volunteer work, including nursing. She appears to be a sweet woman, but Joanna seems to not recognize Marni. Marni is also upset to see that Joanna fits in very well with the family. The plot thickens when her mother Gail (Jamie Lee Curtis) meets up with Joanna's aunt Ramona (Sigourney Weaver), a woman who pushed Gail into a pool at their senior prom for unclear reasons, despite having been friends throughout high school. Ramona is now a successful and wealthy woman who owns several hotels and a private plane.
Although Gail seems willing to put the past behind her, she still feels the need to "outdo" Ramona ring their interactions together. On the other hand, Marni is unwilling to forget the things Joanna did to her in high school, unless she apologizes, and decides to try and let her brother know of Joanna's bullying past. Her attempts to get Will alone for a conversation fail. When Marni lets on to Joanna that she knows who she really is, it is obvious that Joanna remembers Marni. She refuses to give Marni a meaningful apology, and treats her disrespectfully, leaving Marni convinced that Joanna has not changed. Meanwhile, Gail comes to Ramona's hotel room for "closure" about anything bad between them that happened in the past. They appear to make up, but Ramona still seems not to be too fond of Gail.
One day on the street, Will and Marni's grandmother Bunny (Betty White) meet a man named Tim (Kyle Bornheimer). Joanna reveals that they have dated, and Tim appears devastated when he hears that she's marrying Will. It is obvious that Joanna and Tim's relationship was much more than dating. Marni decides to bring Tim to the rehearsal dinner as part of her plan to stop the wedding. When it is time for guests to make a toast to the bride and groom, Tim unexpectedly jumps up to give his toast to Joanna. He reveals that they were almost about to get married, but because of "cold feet," Joanna left him at the altar. This information surprises Will (and everyone else). Later, a video is presented (with footage obviously recovered by Marni) from their old high school timecapsule. The video reveals Joanna as she was in high school: an alpha-female bully, with the footage showing proof of her tormenting Marni. Will unplugs the video projector before the video is complete and walks out, furious.
However, Marni is in trouble when everyone discovers that she was responsible for the video at the rehearsal dinner. Marni decides to talk with Joanna, hoping to reconcile, but Joanna is too furious and tells Marni "I thought we could start over." Marni is now convinced that Joanna hasn't changed and walks away. Joanna then starts a fight with Marni, and Marni reciprocates, and they both break several dishes and wedding gifts. Will walks in and witnesses the fight. He tells Joanna that he doesn't care about her bullying past or that she had once been engaged to Tim. He is only mad at her for not being honest with him. He tells Marni that he is furious at her for going behind his back in order to stop the wedding.
Meanwhile, Ramona and Gail argue after the rehearsal dinner. Ramona expresses anger at Marni's actions, but accuses Gail of always trying to ruin her life throughout high school. A light cat-fight ensues with both of them falling into the pool. Ramona reveals that she always had contempt for Gail, despite the fact that they were friends, because she always competed with and outdid her. But she became enemies with Gail when she took the boy that Ramona wanted to the prom. She sarcastically thanks Gail for what she did, because it motivated her to become successful in life. Gail apologizes for being an "insensitive" friend, but reveals that she is proud of Ramona, and that her family is her accomplishment. Ramona, remorseful of her actions, tells Gail that she was jealous, not only of their rivalry, but because she was jealous that Gail had a loving family, while Ramona is divorced with no husband or children, except Joanna, whom she felt Gail was trying to take from her. Gail and Ramona reconcile and are friends once again.
Later that night, Marni finds Joanna in the kitchen binging on junk food (in pity over losing Will). She finally admits to Marni that she feels truly awful for bullying and tormenting her and feels like an awful person, and that she truly loves her brother. Marni forgives her and promises to get back Will. The next day, Marni pretends to be injured in order to attract Will's attention, and apologizes to him for her actions. She says that she only did it to protect Will from "the woman (she thought) Joanna was."
Joanna and Will reconcile in Marni's old tree house, but it collapses and injures both of them. They are both forced to stay at a hospital (with Marni's father, a doctor, taking care of them) and delay the wedding. However, Marni puts together a makeshift wedding at the hospital, with the bride and groom bandaged, but properly dressed and able to walk down the aisle. Marni appears to start a relationship with Charlie, her brother's good friend who was always kind to her. Joanna introces Marni's grandmother Bunny to her grandmother Helen. It is revealed that grandma Helen (Cloris Leachman), and grandma Bunny were enemies in high school when Joanna's grandmother stole a boy from her. However, Bunny gets her revenge when she takes away a potential male dancer from her.
