影片中還有一位主要人物是上校丹。他在越南戰爭中失去了雙腿。他說他的命運就是戰死。然而阿甘卻救他，讓他活了下來。失去雙腿後他開始憎恨生活，生活得很頹廢，責怪阿甘當初救了他。然而當他調整心態，去和阿甘一起捕魚生活，有了收獲後，開始感覺到生活的美好。感謝阿甘當初就了他。

英語翻譯技巧：

第一、省略翻譯法

這與最開始提到的增譯法相反，就是要求你把不符合漢語，或者英語的表達的方式、思維的習慣或者語言的習慣的部分刪去，以免使所翻譯出的句子沉雜累贅。

第二、合並法

合並翻譯法就是把多個短句子或者簡單句合並到一起，形成一個復合句或者說復雜句，多出現在漢譯英的題目里出現，比如最後會翻譯成定語從句、狀語從句、賓語從句等等。

這是因為漢語句子裡面喜歡所謂的「形散神不散」，即句子結構鬆散，但其中的語意又是緊密相連的，所以為了表達出這種感覺，漢語多用簡單句進行寫作。而英語則不同，它比較強調形式，結構嚴謹，所以會多用復雜句、長句。因此，漢譯英時還需要注意介詞、連詞、分詞的使用。

Atonement,是救贖之義。at one,指的是由一人所帶來的救贖，在基督教中指的是耶穌基督的犠牲，為人類帶來的救恩。而在肖申克的電影之中，主角最後的成功逃獄之前，為獄友帶來了各種恩惠，而他的逃獄也來自於多人的幫助，彼此為彼此在一群有罪之人聚集之地，成為了彼此的救贖。

事實上，主角Andy一開始是被陷害入獄的，所以救贖這個名詞，同時也帶有諷刺之義。無罪之人何來救贖。

Dan lost his legs in Vietnarm War. He said that his fate is death in war. However, Mr. A Gan saved him and let him be alive. Gan shouldn't save him. When he adjusted his mind, living on fishing with A Gan, he started to enjoy the wonderful life and thank A Gan's help.
