中學的教育一直在強調素質教育，課程改革，那麼我們大學的英語課程其實也是在不斷的改革之中，現在大學生的英語實際狀況就是考試能力很強，但是實際應用就很差了，加上各地情況的不同，大學里學生們的自己的放鬆，導致最終大學里英語的整體水平都很低，且低中也是參差不齊。而我們現在大學的英語的教育普遍都是採用同樣地教材，同樣地教學計劃，同樣地教育方式，導致學生對英語的興趣的下降和英語水平的下降。所以，我們有必要，從學生的能力和興趣出發，開設不同水平，不同內容的英語選修課，來滿足不同英語水平的學生的需求，這也是我們大學英語教育改革的必然之路。
