從前有一個叫做阿拉丁的少年。他父親已經去世了，只剩他跟母親在一塊兒，過的生活很苦。
有一天，他碰見一個法師。這個法師說是他叔叔，要帶他到京城去學點兒手藝。阿拉丁相信了他的話，就跟他走了。
法師帶著阿拉丁到了京城附近的一座山上，在地上生了一堆火，念了幾句咒語。只聽見「隆隆」地一陣響聲，地上出現了一扇石門。
法師抓住石門上的扣環，把石門拉開，說：「阿拉丁，這下面有一盞油燈，你去把它拿上來，我們就發財了。」
石門下面有一條地道。這條地道只有阿拉丁的身子那麼寬，裡面很黑。阿拉丁害怕，不敢下去。法師取下手上戴的戒指，說：「這是能辟邪的戒指。給你。你戴上它，什麼妖魔鬼怪都不能傷害你。你放心下去吧！」

阿拉丁定定心，說：「請你帶我回家吧！」說完就發覺自己到了家裡。

國王見阿拉丁長的英俊，又有錢，就把公主嫁給了他。

國王發覺阿拉丁的城堡和公主都不見了，非常生氣。他限阿拉丁在叄十天以內把公主找回來，不然就要處死刑。
阿拉丁問遍了所有的人，誰也不知道他的妻子和城堡到哪兒去了。到了第叄天早上，他洗手的時候擦到戒指，戒指神又出現了。他要戒指神幫他把公主找回來。可是戒指神沒有那麽大的法力，只能把他送到非洲。
阿拉丁到非洲找到了他的妻子和城堡，但是沒辦法拿到那一盞油燈。因為法師不管到哪兒去，都把油燈帶在身上。他的妻子想到了一個主意，說：「這個壞人想要我嫁給他，我一直沒答應他。你去拿點兒安眠葯來給我。然後我假裝對他好，跳舞給他看。等他不注意的時候，就把葯放在酒里，騙他喝下去。這樣我們就可以拿到油燈了。」
法師不知道是計，見公主對他那麼好，高興地喝下那杯酒，倒在地上睡著了。
於是，阿拉丁拿到了油燈，教燈神把整個城堡搬回來原來的地方。

"It is true. Mustapha did have a brother, but I never knew him," Aladdin's mother said. "My husband has left us with nothing, and Aladdin has no job."
"I want to help your son," said the magician. "I will build him a shop. He can sell fruit or shoes or clothing. Then you will have money."

"Be patient, my boy," replied the magician. "I am taking you to the mountains. There is a special place I want you to see."

Aladdin poured the oil out of the lamp. Then he returned to the steps. The magician heard him coming.
"Stop there," he told Aladdin. "Throw the lamp to me."
"You are too far, Uncle," Aladdin said. "I don't want to break the lamp. Wait until I come up the steps..."
阿拉丁把燈里的油倒出來，接著返回階梯處，魔術師聽到他來了。
他告訴阿拉丁說：「停在那裡，把燈丟給我。」

The magician got very angry. He threw some more powder on the fire, and the stone rolled on top of the hole. Suddenly, everything around Aladdin was dark.
"Fool!" screamed the magician. "You did not do what I told you! Now, you will die in that hole!"

"Please get me out of this place," replied Aladdin. "I want to go home."

"I feel hungry," said Aladdin. "Can you get me something to eat?"

石門下面有一條地道。這條地道只有阿拉丁的身子那麼寬，裡面很黑。阿拉丁害怕，不敢下去。法師取下手上戴的戒指，說：「這是能辟邪的戒指。給你。你戴上它，什麼妖魔鬼怪都不能傷害你。你放心下去吧！」
阿拉丁走完地道，到了一個地窖里。地窖里除了有一盞點著的油燈以外，還有許多美麗的珠寶，看得他兩眼發呆。過了好一會兒，他才抓了幾把珠寶塞進口袋兒，吹熄油燈，倒掉燈油，拿起油燈往回走。
法師等得不耐煩，在洞口大吼：「你死在下面了！快把油燈拿上來！你在干什麼？」
阿拉丁聽法師的口氣很兇，有點兒害怕。他愣了一下，沒有馬上回答。法師氣得「砰」地一聲把石門關上了。
阿拉丁推不動石門，急得直喊。無意中，他的手擦了戒指一下，眼前突然出現了一個巨人。巨人說：「我是戒指神，誰有你戴的戒指，我就聽誰的指揮。你要我做什麼？」
阿拉丁定定心，說：「請你帶我回家吧！」說完就發覺自己到了家裡。
過了幾天，阿拉丁想把油燈擦乾凈。不料他剛擦了叄下，忽然又有一個巨人出現。巨人說：「我是燈神。誰有了我，我就聽誰的指揮做事。」
阿拉丁起先吃了一驚，後來說：「你給我辦一桌酒席來！」話還沒說完，眼前就出現了一桌酒席。
阿拉丁跟他母親吃完，心裡很高興。以後的日子裡，他們需要什麼，就擦油燈，教燈神去做。這樣兒過了些日子。阿拉丁聽說國王要給公主找一個丈夫，就教燈神給他變了一座城堡，把自己打扮成王子一樣，請母親帶著他從地窖拿來的珠寶，去獻給國王，向國王求親。
國王見阿拉丁長的英俊，又有錢，就把公主嫁給了他。
法師知道了這件事，化裝成賣油燈的，天天在阿拉丁的城堡附近叫：「舊油指換新油燈！」
公主聽到，想起了阿拉丁當寶貝一樣珍藏的舊油燈，就教僕人拿去，換了一盞新油燈。
法師一拿到神燈，立刻擦了叄下，變出燈神，吩咐燈神說：「把整個城堡給我搬到非洲去！」
燈神把城堡搬走了。
國王發覺阿拉丁的城堡和公主都不見了，非常生氣。他限阿拉丁在叄十天以內把公主找回來，不然就要處死刑。
阿拉丁問遍了所有的人，誰也不知道他的妻子和城堡到哪兒去了。到了第叄天早上，他洗手的時候擦到戒指，戒指神又出現了。他要戒指神幫他把公主找回來。可是戒指神沒有那麽大的法力，只能把他送到非洲。
阿拉丁到非洲找到了他的妻子和城堡，但是沒辦法拿到那一盞油燈。因為法師不管到哪兒去，都把油燈帶在身上。他的妻子想到了一個主意，說：「這個壞人想要我嫁給他，我一直沒答應他。你去拿點兒安眠葯來給我。然後我假裝對他好，跳舞給他看。等他不注意的時候，就把葯放在酒里，騙他喝下去。這樣我們就可以拿到油燈了。」
法師不知道是計，見公主對他那麼好，高興地喝下那杯酒，倒在地上睡著了。
於是，阿拉丁拿到了油燈，教燈神把整個城堡搬回來原來的地方。
國王見公主回來了，心裡很高興。他原諒了阿拉丁，但是卻把壞心眼的法師關進了地牢。隨後阿拉丁又把母親接來，一塊兒過著快樂幸 的日子。
