前90分鍾，基本就是按特工片的類型走：主人公獲得了一個任務，然後飛往世界各地執行這個任務，在執行任務過程中，獲得一個搭檔，與搭檔並肩前行，解開了謎團又出現了一些謎團……直到最終任務完成。

但從電影一開始，《信條》就埋下科幻的引子，只不過在最後一小時才徹底引爆——觀眾才發現，不爆則矣，一爆就是核彈級別的，信息量爆棚，這里暫且不表。從科幻片角度看，《信條》是硬科幻作品，它是以物理學的概念來包裝故事，以物理學的學說為根基，對世界的樣子進行自洽的假想和推演。
「熵」是理解《信條》一個很核心的概念，它的物理意義是體系混亂程度的度量。正常的自然規律下，事物遵循的是「熵增」原理，即粒子從有序向著無序發展。比如常溫下一個麵包只會從新鮮到腐爛，而不會反過來。但《信條》在科學基礎上假想了「逆熵」這一情形，在一個「逆熵」的時空中，這里的時間規律不是從有序到無序、從過去到未來，而是從無序到有序、從未來到過去，麵包從腐爛變成新鮮，飛去出的子彈按原軌跡回到彈匣。

《信條》中，一個人通過時間機器可以進入一個「逆熵」狀態，不斷倒回到過去。通俗地理解，《信條》隸屬於科幻電影中很大的一個分支：時間旅行。《信條》的故事底本是一個特工通過時間旅行執行任務，有人想要藉助時間旅行毀滅世界，主人公所隸屬的TENET肩負拯救世界的使命。
只不過有了逆熵的設定，《信條》中的時間旅行與以往我們所熟悉的時間旅行電影有所不同。常見的時間旅行敘事主要是這兩種，一種是《十二猴子》（1995）、《環形使者》（2012）、《前目的地》（2014）等的環形敘事，主人公進入時間的河流，回到過去想要逆轉未來，卻發現「The future is history」（《十二猴子》），無論幾次重回過去，時間的河流不可逆轉。另外一種是《時空線索》（2007）、《源代碼》（2011）、《明日邊緣》（2014）這一類型的，時間呈分岔式，主人公回到過去就可能產生截然不同的結果。
相對而言，這兩種時間旅行都較好理解，因為無論主人公第幾次回到過去，過去時空的運行規則與當下一模一樣，無論是主人公還是觀眾都不會有接受上的難度。
《信條》與它們截然不同。它的時間旅行是基於逆熵，這就包涵了至少兩個層面的不同。第一個層面，逆熵世界的運行規則與當下的世界是反著來的，人是逆著走，車是倒著開，打架動作是反著來，時間往迴流，果成了因。當主人公經由時間機器進入逆熵狀態，他的行為仍然是正向，但整個世界在倒流。這形成強烈的陌生化效應，不僅電影中的主人公感到懵逼，觀眾也是頭一回在電影中看到如此奇觀。

第二個層面，就是逆轉時間的邏輯。以往的時間穿越電影對此大多語焉不詳或者簡單帶過，創作者並未把它當做一個「問題」來深究。於是你看《明日邊緣》中阿湯哥飾演的凱奇少校倏忽地就回到了過去。但《信條》中，怎麼回到過去、想要回到過去哪一個點背後，有一套相當復雜、縝密又嚴謹的邏輯體系。
電影中的時間機器，有紅、藍兩邊，中間隔著透明玻璃。紅進藍出，是從熵增進入逆熵，時間逆流；藍進紅出，是從逆熵進入熵增，時間正向流動。
時間機器也不能讓你想回到過去哪個點就回到哪一個點。舉一個容易理解的例子。今天下午三點你參加了一場考試，下午五點結束，但你失利了，只考了60分，你事後知道了答案，想考個100分。現在是下午五點，你想回到兩個小時前，也即下午三點重新考試。你從時間機器進入逆熵狀態，不是一下子回到兩個小時前，而是你得老老實實跟著時間倒流兩個小時，這時你看到的世界也是反著來的，你得戴上特殊口罩才能呼吸。倒流兩個小時後，你再從時間機器的藍門穿過紅門，進入熵增狀態，你就回到了下午三點，世界的運行是常態化的，你開始「第二次」考試。
