早就想寫這一篇關於外國電影名經典翻譯的文章了。優秀的翻譯之於原文及影片,就好像蔥花之於蔥油潑面那麼重要。你還別說,文字的魅力對人的影響就是那麼大,同一個意思,不同的表達方式,收獲的結果就可能天差地別。同理,電影的名字是影片劇情的概括與升華,起得不好,票房慘敗顆粒無收也是有的。以下片名翻譯按優秀程度遞減排列,當然,這只是我一家之見,不服……憋著。

1. 魂斷藍橋( Waterloo Bridge , 1940 年)

這是我心目中永遠的No.1,迄今為止,我再未見過比它更經典、更貼切的片名翻譯了!我第一次看《魂斷藍橋》是中央台的譯製片,當時不知道其英文名,看過影片後,覺得片名也就是恰如其分。後來得知原名是Waterloo Bridge,我立刻被驚艷到了!

首先,如果譯為《滑鐵盧橋》,從翻譯角度看,當然沒有錯,但會讓人以為這是一部戰爭片或關於拿破崙的歷史人物傳記,影院絕對會失去一大部分女性觀眾和情侶檔;在中國,這部在西方大放異彩的片子也很有可能夭折,而不會成為傳頌已久的愛情經典片。

其次,這個Bridge為什麼是藍橋而不是其他橋呢?藍橋取自於陝西民間傳說「藍橋相會」,講的是唐代秀才裴航沖破世俗偏見,不顧門第高低,不同流俗,執著追求績麻姑娘雲英(後來發現是仙女),通過不懈努力最終與之結成百年之好的故事。同樣是不門當戶對的愛情,藍橋相會以喜劇收尾,而影片中則以女主角在滑鐵盧橋上與列車相撞自殺身亡結束——魂斷藍橋,再貼切不過了。

最後,如果你講白話或者粵語,你就會知道,「魂斷藍」三個字的白話或粵語讀音與Waterloo的英文發音相近——這就是白話版的音譯啊,而且與劇情結合得如此渾然天成、天衣無縫!再沒有哪部電影名的翻譯能達到這樣的高度了。每次看到,我都想把膝蓋獻給那位不知名的譯者,為Ta的智慧與文采,以及對我持續而長久的啟迪和影響。

2. 她比煙花寂寞( Hilary and Jackie , 1998 年)

我知道這部影片完全是因為師太(亦舒)的同名小說《她比煙花寂寞》,應該說,電影片名借用了小說的名字,因為小說在1996年已經出版。片名已經完全脫離英文原名,純粹是電影主題的濃縮升華,然而十分准確,直擊靈魂。光看名字,就能猜出說的大概是什麼樣的故事,看影片前大約會准備好紙巾。

師太的小說寫的是一個電影明星生前燦爛輝煌,身後卻寂寞無比,去世時候連遺產都沒人接收;而她畢生所願不過是像普通人那樣結婚生子吵鬧而庸俗的過完一生。這個平凡無奇的心願,終究沒能實現。就像煙花,綻放時璀璨奪目,背後卻是無邊的黑與寂寞。電影與之同名,其實很有道理。主人公同樣是煙花般絢爛的一生,同樣生前風光無限,對愛卻始終求而不得。求而不得,人生至苦。

影片的其他譯名有狂戀大提琴、中斷的琴聲、希拉里和傑基、希拉莉和積琪琳。所謂沒有比較,就沒有傷害。這些譯名不算錯,但都不如煙花那樣意味雋永,餘音繞梁。

3. 蝴蝶夢( Rebecca , 1940 年)

《蝴蝶夢》原名《呂蓓卡》,呂蓓卡是影片中實質性的女主角——盡管一開篇她已然是個死人,但音容宛在,庄園里處處都是她的印跡。她的幽靈通過死忠女管家繼續控制著她的家、她的丈夫以及新任女主人,直至一切毀滅。對於新來的女主人,這段經歷就像一場斑斕而陰森的夢,醒來之後,只余追憶。

其實我很想把春風化雨排在第四,但因為末路狂花結尾太令人心痛和震撼,以至於覺得片名都帶著血色(果然是誰慘誰勝出么……),所以忍痛讓春風排在第五。Dead Poets Society原來譯為「死亡詩社」,乍一看我還以為是我最心水的懸疑恐怖片,看了之後才知道講的是一個老師通過言傳身教潛移默化,幫助禁錮在傳統守舊教條框框內的學生們解放思想、領悟自由與生命真諦的故事(裡面將將18歲的伊桑·霍克真是帥到憂傷)。

一直以來,外語片名的翻譯大部分都是大陸勝出(至少在以前是如此),香港譯名總是帶著濃厚的市井或江湖味,台灣的翻譯多是流於艷俗。然而在本片,台灣譯的「春風化雨」遠勝其他兩地,栩栩如生的提煉了影片主題和主角形象。對比香港譯為「暴雨驕陽」,還有「壯志驕陽」,港真,不知道是什麼鬼!

6. 綠野仙蹤( The Wizard of OZ , 1939 年)

這個奇幻故事稱得上家喻戶曉,很少有人不知道的。當年我看這個故事時還不懂英文呢,書名被譯為《奧茲國國王》,非常符合小孩子的審美情趣——小時候,大家不都愛聽王子公主國王王後之流的故事么。後來上大學,才看到書的電影版,立刻被「綠野仙蹤」這個名字秒到了。我相信很多人和我一樣,都被這個充滿美麗夢幻氣息的名字所吸引——這更像屬於大人的童話。綠野茫茫,仙蹤渺渺,帶著一絲中國特有的古典神話的飄逸,與西方的活潑明麗相得益彰,令人感覺深刻而鮮明。

·朦朧晨霧中,羊群緩緩走過草地,牧羊人在牧笛上吹奏出樸素單純而又悠揚舒緩的音調。

·維也納河畔,作曲家施特勞斯所愛之人不忍破壞其家庭獨自乘船離開,輪船遠去,倩影消失在遠方,施特勞斯煢煢孑立,而粼粼碧波的岸邊是一對對幸福的情侶。

說實話,這種有婦之夫才子與紅顏才女相識恨晚相戀,原配欲大度退出成全,然而才(小)女(三)良心發現,浪(渣)子(男)回歸家庭的故事——如果不是有那麼多流芳百世的作品加持,也就是碗狗血——當然,本片的碗比較華麗。

盡管如此,我仍幸慶因為片名而去觀影——那首《當我們年輕時》,猝不及防就讓當時的我遭到了一萬點的心靈暴擊:當我們還年輕,在美妙的五月早晨,你曾說:你愛我,當我們還年輕。

五月的早晨,像朝露、像夕陽、像最珍貴的青春,美好卻易逝,唯有愛可以永不磨滅。

8. 亂世佳人( Gone with the wind , 1940 年)

說來慚愧,直到上高中我才拜讀了赫赫有名的《飄》,上大學才看到根據書改編的電影《亂世佳人》。一般來說,如果先讀了原著,後面再看根據其拍出的電影或電視劇,總會覺得後者不如前者——文字留給讀者的腦補空間遠遠超過具體的影像。你在看書時,你的腦海里會形成你所希望的書中的主人公的形象,書里描述的一切細節,也會帶有你根深蒂固的個人風格。但是《亂世佳人》完全沒有輸給原作,因為費雯·麗和克拉克·蓋博正是我心目中的郝思嘉和白瑞特,尤其是費雯·麗的眼睛和氣質,和書里描寫的一模一樣:「帽上長長的翠綠色飄帶映襯著她那亮綠靈動的雙眸……她是降落人間的精靈——純潔又邪惡的迷人精靈。」這大概得歸因於演員超群的演技。

Gone with the wind的中文書名譯為《飄》,電影名譯為《亂世佳人》,都非常棒。書是經典名著,書名要言簡意賅,又要具備意味深長、耐人尋味的特點。一個「飄」字道盡了英文原名和書的精髓。在大型戰爭面前,個人的命運就如同被風刮下的落葉,背井離鄉,流落四方,但最終會回到堅實的大地上。影片要賣座,就得盡可能吸引不同口味的觀眾,雅俗共賞。在艷俗的「佳人」前面放個「亂世」,立刻有了沉重和悲壯感,並且也概括了影片主要內容,真是極好的(甄嬛附體…)。相比之下,直譯為《隨風而逝》就顯得中庸且不知所雲了。

9. 廊橋遺夢( The Bridge of Madison County , 1994 年)

The Bridge ofMadison County譯為「廊橋遺夢」充分體現了我國文化的博大精深。一開始,我也不知道為啥將「麥迪遜橋」翻譯成「廊橋」,直到我看到影片中的橋——有頂的橋,可不就是中國的廊橋么——有房檐的橋。當然,麥迪遜的橋要比咱們精雕細刻的廊橋遜多了。「遺夢」用來形容纏綿悱惻而不能圓滿的愛情再合適不過了。廊橋與遺夢的組合絕不僅是故事發生之地與故事結局的簡單概括,它所包含的深意.....你懂的。

10. 人鬼情未了( Ghost , 1990 年)

與前面神作相比,其實《人鬼情未了》這個翻譯並不是那麼出彩,但是奈何隊友太坑爹啊——其他的譯名有《幽靈》以及《把妹把到鬼》——差點讓我笑出八塊腹肌。尤其是想到影片講述的是一個凄美深情的人鬼愛情時,配上這么個二貨的片名,真是很有反差萌啊~~

其他的佳作還有 風月俏佳人( PrettyWoman )、聞香識女人( Scentof a Woman )、月色撩人( Moonstruck )、深閨疑雲( Suspicion )、壯志凌雲( Top Gum )、出水芙蓉( Bath Beauty )、紅菱艷( The Red Shoes )等 。但於我而言,感觸都沒有前10個那麼多,就不寫啦。

這些影片最新的,距今也快有20年,感覺那時的翻譯者對作品不止於「准確」這一標准,他們把電影吃透,力求做到信、達、雅,帶給觀眾藝術般的體驗。如今不知是我看電影看少了,還是翻譯水準下降,總之,再沒有見過令我眼前一亮且怦然心動的片名了(惆悵臉)。
