整部影片寫的是戰爭，freedom強調的主題是「自由」。

1、影片主人公華萊士起初並不是一個驍勇善戰願意征戰沙場的戰士，他有自己對未來的打算，他不是一個貪心的人，他想要的生活很簡單，娶妻生子，一家人快樂幸福。

2、讓華萊士意想不到的是英格蘭的入侵讓他極簡的生活都被打破。後來他有了自己的愛人，可又是在殘酷的現實中他失去了摯愛，為了給愛妻報仇卷進了抗擊英格蘭殖民者的戰爭中。華萊士極度渴望自由，於是他領導著那些也渴望自由願意為了保衛自己家園的民眾向英軍開戰，未解除英格蘭的奴役而戰。

3、戰爭愈演愈烈，形式也一直沒能好轉，但他依然不願放棄任何一個爭取自由的機會，拒絕妥協和臣服，毅然接受酷刑。當他在忍受極刑之痛時，執行官也向過往寬恕賜他速死，華萊士沒說一句話。最後的剖腹之刑也是他生命的最後時刻，他歇斯底里的喊出了最後一句話，他一直為此而戰的一句話——freedom！自由。

《勇敢的心》創作背景

《勇敢的心》是根據真人真事改編的一部電影，影片的人物原型就是英國歷史上富有傳奇色彩的英雄人物：威廉·華萊士。《勇敢的心》的劇本改編自蘭道爾·華萊士1995年出版的小說，而小說就是以《華萊士之歌》為藍本進行創作再加工的。

在創作劇本的時候，編劇蘭德爾手裡掌握的關於威廉·華萊士的史料很少，於是蘭德爾根據15世紀末愛爾蘭游唱詩人亨利所吟誦的史詩創作劇情[6]。

蘭德爾最開始打算從威廉·華萊士的成年開始寫起，加入孩提時的前序是後來產生的想法；按照劇本的初稿，Murron在華萊士父親的葬禮上原本送給華萊士的是朵玫瑰而不是影片呈現的薊花，但後來有人指出，玫瑰是英國的象徵，放在這個具有特定歷史背景的劇里十分不合適，所以後來換成了薊花。
