本片根據柯奈爾·烏爾里奇1947年發表的小說《黑暗中的華爾茲》改編而成，是一部關於愛與慾望的黑色激情懸疑片，故事背景發生在充滿異國風情的古巴，但由於政治原因，外景地設在了墨西哥。導演邁克爾·克里斯托弗曾執導過探討現代年輕人兩性關系的影片《激情代價》（Body Shots），此前他還與女主角安吉麗娜·朱麗合作過電視電影《吉婭》，這部片子為朱麗捧回了1999年金球獎電視電影類最佳女主角獎。
師出名門的安吉麗娜·朱麗是好萊塢後起之秀中的佼佼者，2000年因成功出演了《失魂少女》中的精神病女郎而勇奪奧斯卡最佳女配角獎。本片是她繼《失魂少女》之後推出的首部作品，朱麗另外一部倍受矚目的作品《古幕麗影》將在今年7月上映，心急的影迷可以先看看本片，領略她狂野而奔放不羈的魅力。
本片的男主角是有「拉丁情人」之稱的安東尼奧·班德拉斯，機智、幽默、略顯脆弱的表演，連同他身上非美國化的個人魅力，使他成為觀眾心目中的性感偶像和最佳男演員之一。《原罪》是他和朱麗的首次合作，兩人因在片中的大膽激情演出還傳出過假戲真做的緋聞，但兩人畢竟各有家室，在眾目睽睽下演親熱戲，還是應該有些分寸的嘛。或許連他們都沒料到自己會演得這么投入，以致招來了負面反應。
從影片的宣傳照上看，朱麗與班德拉斯赤裸纏綿的鏡頭確實非常煽情，讓人臉紅心跳，而片中一場兩人在浴缸里的激情戲，更是被米高梅公司高層認為過分大膽暴露，決定動刀刪剪，以避免影片太過色情，通不過MPAA的檢查。之後朱麗表示對米高梅的這種宣傳伎倆十分不滿，其實片中百分之九十左右的戲都屬「斯文鏡頭」，米高梅此舉實屬誤導觀眾.
