盡管現實中的迷信意識早已在唯物主義面前敗北，但至少在藝術和電影中，富有靈性的東方文化還是不時地顯現出優勢。超現實主義電影，最能突顯東西方文化的這種差異和差距。在楊德洛維斯基的《聖山》中，我們便可見墨西哥大師是如何不惜一切地賣弄奇幻同時又小心翼翼地為自己的「超現實包裝」尋找科學的解說和理由。其實，西方此類電影很多時候都局限在以超現實主義現象驗證著現實，而此時東方電影卻能灑脫地以現實主義原則解構超現實主義現象。比較《雨月物語》，我們就會發現溝口健二是如何自信並理所當然地讓鬼魂隨心所欲地出入銀幕。然而也正是他這種天經地義的自信，才使影片始終籠罩著一層虛實結合的快慰和朦朧幽哀的凄美意境。

按照中西雙方的價值取向的差異，我們可以把中西文化分別概括為倫理型文化與功利型文化。
中國傳統倫理總體取向是重義輕利。「利義之辨」是貫穿中國文明史的一個基本問題。主張義利兼顧的墨家由於失去生存的土壤而中道而忘，而主張絕仁棄義，絕巧棄利，義利皆無的道家則把把功績和名利完全剔除在人格標准之外，這種主張盡管一度與儒家義利觀並駕齊驅，但由於不合當時社會需要而不為統治階級所用。作為支配幾千年中國封建社會的主流意識形態的儒家思想，其基本主張是「重義輕利」、「見利思義」、 「以義制利」，提倡義利發生矛盾時，應當捨生取義。泛道德主義的中國傳統，用道德解釋一切，導致國民樂於言義恥於談利，重道德修養，輕外在事功的價值取向，從而導致科學在古代中國失去獨立的人格價值和社會地位。人專注於自身的內心世界，喪失對理性和自然的興趣，缺乏西方文化的理性傳統和對科學的探索熱情。道德與理性的分離，使中國傳統出現反理性的傾向，從而阻礙了中國科學精神的發育。這就是為什麼中國古代空論玄談盛行，科學衰微和商業不發達的深層原因之所在。科學技術被視為淫技奇巧，商人被貶為四民之末，從而也導致中國古代科學盡管發達卻難於付諸施用，商業發展緩慢，國家積貧積弱的嚴重後果，到了近代更成了西方殖民者侵略的對象。
在西方，盡管我們說，在漫長的社會歷史發展進程中，其社會價值觀念復雜多樣，但是西方社會是以個人為本位，所追求的價值目標是個人的權益的實現，並且認為它們是神聖不可侵犯的，是與生既來的，是天賦的。趨利避苦是個體的本能，事功求利是生存的目的，在追求自身的權利和利益的過程中不須負任何道德責任，可以不擇手段。故此，功利主義始終在西方社會中占據主流地位，起主導作用。毫無疑問，這種功利主義對於催生後世資本主義萌芽取著催化劑地作用，但也使得資本主義原始積累變得非常地殘酷和血腥。正如馬克思所說：「資本來到世間，從頭到腳，每個毛孔都滴著血和骯臟的東西。」[7]西方社會這種重義輕利的價值取向在一定程度上調動個體追求物質利益的積極性，從而推動了西方社會經濟與科學的發展，但對義的鄙視和貶低又容易導致西方社會片面追逐物質利益而損人利己、惟利是圖，導致人與人之間的關系異化變質，成了赤裸裸的金錢物質利益關系。在西方歷史上，功利主義、實用主義盛行不衰，構成了西方主流價值取向，私有財產神聖不可侵犯成了社會亘古不變的信條。在最大限度地謀求自身的利益觀念的驅動下，科學與技術在西方尤為受到重視，理性主義、科學主義在西方非常發達。在現實生活中，西方人表現出求新奇、好創新、重功利的人格精神。科學觀念和技術意識深入人心，成為構成人格的重要因素。這也導致西方社會重理性而輕情感，長於說理而短於談情，善於邏輯思維而疏於直觀感受。
