影片改編自大衛·尼克爾森的同名小說，小說展現一段感情在長時間洗禮中的起起落落。大衛·尼克爾森用了2年多的時間完成小說的創作，前期需要很長的准備過程就像完成一幅拼圖。

想好每個7月15日那天發生的事，小說中人物對話和虛構情節很多，這也使得這部小說本身就帶有電影性質。在影片的製片人妮娜·雅各布森讀了這部小說後，便決定將小說改編成電影劇本，並搬上大銀幕。
