未成年的小兵「小湖北」每晚充滿嚮往地看著對岸的歌舞昇平，白天卻要經歷戰火的洗禮和親友的傷亡。他是帶著對大上海的嚮往從莊稼地里被征來的，來了之後，蛋糕、洋酒、歌劇都見識到了，中間卻隔著不可度過的死生之河——只要膽敢越界，就是一顆子彈。

據說管虎導演最早拍的是黑白版本，後來放棄。這樣，對面十里洋場流光溢彩的繁華，和這邊鮮血橫流的對此，更加駭人。
