1、印歐語言是以形合為主的語言，有人稱之為線性的語言，其句法以主謂結構為中軸線；如果有賓語或補語成分，可在主線上延伸；定語及狀語成分則以枝椏的形式構成分支線，並通過關聯詞與主軸線相接。

2、樹狀結構由於主謂結構形成了對「全句『牽一發而動全身』的提挈性結構主軸」,因而各支的脈路都一目瞭然，枝枝椏椏都必有歸宿。如果把句的結構比喻成一棵樹，那麼句與句、段落與段落之間彼此關聯、相得益彰，構成了密密挨挨的樹林。
