這匹額頭帶白色星芒斑、四蹄雪白的駿馬名字叫Joey，我卻想叫它Joy，它能活下來和它的主人團聚，實在是太好了。戰火浮生，它所經歷過的形形色色的人，英國人，德國人，法國人，養大它的農場小夥子Albert，騎著它沖鋒陷陣的北薩默塞特義勇騎兵隊上尉Nicholls，照顧它的Gunther和Michael兄弟，撿到它、想教它跨欄的法國小姑娘Emilie，剪斷鐵刺網聯手救下它的英德士兵……這些人中有的死了，有的倖存，戰火帶給各國人民的苦難，誰也不比誰受得少，歷盡艱辛傷痛後的重聚，畢竟是令人欣慰的。只要親愛的還在一起，生活就還能繼續，正如璀璨的晚霞與黑暗的長夜過後，總會有拂曉到來。

吸引我看這部影片的，不是斯皮爾伯格的名頭，也不是參演的演員們，而是難得的一戰題材，和曇花一現的關於北薩默塞特義勇騎兵隊（North Somerset Yeomanry）的片斷。

北薩默塞特義勇騎兵隊是隨英國地方自衛隊（Territorial Force ）的建制而組建的，最初隸屬於第1西南騎兵旅，總部在巴斯，下轄A、B、C、D四支騎兵中隊，其中A中隊駐巴斯，訓練營在巴斯安普敦、法姆博羅、弗洛姆、梅爾斯和羅德。梅爾斯的霍納家族繼承人Edward William Horner在大戰爆發之初應募的便是這支騎兵中隊，後來他轉調第18瑪麗女王所屬輕騎兵隊，1917年在康布雷戰役中陣亡。

一戰爆發後NSY擴編為三個團，其中1/1st是真正意義上的一線作戰部隊。1914年8月份它隨西南騎兵旅轉移到蘇塞克斯，隨後被命令單獨前往法國，11月3日登陸，13日被編入第3騎兵師第6騎兵旅，1915年5月這個團在伊普爾Bellewaarde附近抵抗德軍的進攻中損失慘重，1918年3月離開師部，最初計劃改組為步兵，兩日後改為與萊斯特郡義勇騎兵隊合並組建一個機槍營，最終因為德軍的春季攻勢而擱置，該團仍保留為騎兵團，4月份解編，以中隊為單位並入第6騎兵旅各個營（第1龍騎兵，第3近衛龍騎兵，第10輕騎兵）。影片中出現的這支NSY部隊毫無疑問屬於1/1st NSY。

想必許多女性觀眾是沖著Tom Hiddleston、Benedict Cumberbatch去的，他們兩位在影片中都扮演了NSY的軍官，BC是少校Jamie Stewart，TH是上尉Nicholls，《劍橋風雲》里Julian Bell的扮演者Patrick Kennedy是他們的同僚，中尉Charlie Waverly，這不是Patrick第一次演一戰軍官了。這三位難兄難弟在一次對敵營發動的突襲中一死二俘，馬屍與人屍混雜，僵卧戰場的情狀，雖不血腥，卻足以令人思之憫然。尤其是當我聯想到Edward在1915年的那次重傷，1917年在康佈雷的陣亡，也可能是這樣悲壯的沖鋒陷陣時。以前關注的多為一戰中英軍死難者，看《戰馬》這個片段時，第一次認真考慮了俘虜的問題，令人腆顏的是，盡管這是個很明顯的問題，以前忽略它卻是因為覺得戰俘不夠光榮尊嚴之緣故。Waverly被從馬上掀翻下來，Stewart在包圍中將佩刀重重刺入土中，又有何不尊嚴之處？一戰本來就是消耗人生命的無價值之戰，不值得那麼多青年為它殉葬。然而Stewart在戰前動員演講時的那句for fallen comrades還是感動了我。for fallen comrades，對於身在泥濘和炮火中的士兵們，要比for the King來得實在得多吧。

反戰主題無處不在。Albert瘸腿又酗酒的父親Ted原是帝國義勇騎兵隊老兵，參加了第二次布爾戰爭，在南非服役，負過重傷，拿過DCM（優異作戰勛章，和DSO對應，DSO授予委任軍官，DCM授予非委任軍官），但Ted對自己在戰爭中的作為一無驕傲，他扔掉了自己的團三角旗和勛章，妻子Rose卻暗地裡保存並藏了起來。後來Rose把這些給Albert看。那面猩紅的三角旗就此成了影片的一個符號，隨著Albert的手繫到了變為戰馬的Joy的轡上，然後穿越戰火，落到那對法國爺孫手裡，又在最後回歸了Albert之手。

當Nicholls陣亡後，坐騎Joy被德軍俘獲，它被交給兩個年輕的後勤士兵Gunther和Michael，然而隨著戰局的演變，Michael被調入現役，Gunther害怕年紀太小的Michael會在戰場上死去，他會背棄自己許諾要照顧好弟弟的誓言，他在半路上騎著Joy截走了Michael，當了逃兵。影片沒有給人安慰的結局，這對兄弟一如我擔憂的那樣，被抓到槍斃了。

然後來到了法國爺孫家裡，孫女的父母死於戰爭，孫女指責爺爺懦弱，而爺爺說，there are different ways to be brave。孫女撿到了Gunther和Michael留下的Joy和它的黑馬朋友。她訓練Joy，想讓它學會跨欄，可這樣田園式的寧靜生活只是瞬息，Joy很快被來到的德軍部隊帶走，為了頂替衰頹的小黑，它自願被發配去拉超重型榴彈炮（那是Dicke Bertha？對一戰重炮沒有研究，求指教），從戰馬降格成了苦力。

高爆彈的火光照亮了英軍塹壕，塹壕里出現了Albert的臉，原來他也已經從戎，到了法國。時間流逝，1918年索姆河，一場小型塹壕攻防戰正激烈展開。在機槍的掃射前，英軍不斷仆倒，Albert沖鋒到德軍塹壕前沿，用一枚手雷幹掉了德軍機槍手，奪取塹壕的短暫興奮很快被突如其來的毒氣沖散。另一邊，小黑終於因力竭而倒斃行軍途中，失伴的Joy在逼近的坦克前左沖右突，最後幾盡瘋狂，在兩軍對峙的疆場上狂奔，不幸陷入鐵刺網的牢籠。為了救出Joy，英德士兵各舉白旗暫時休戰，兩個本源是兄弟，卻成為仇敵的年輕人一邊用鐵鉗剪斷Joy身上的鐵刺，一邊用英語流利地交談。大戰中許多英德士兵兼有兩國血統，他們面臨陣營選擇的煎熬，他們面臨許多困難，他們面臨拿起槍屠殺自己手足的悲劇。然而這就是戰爭。

被毒氣薰傷眼睛的Albert在急救站里與面目全非的Joy重逢，當年的誓言，「無論你走到哪裡，我都要找到你」，猶在耳畔。

雖然不盡完美，有所失望，但這仍是我今年看到的好影片。
