As the Duke is wondering what to do, Nerissa, dressed like a lawyer's clerk, arrives with a letter from the famous lawyer whom Portia has visited. While the Duke is talking to Nerissa, Shylock gets ready to cut his pound of flesh from Antonio.
Then the letter is read out for all in the court to hear. "I am very ill. When your letter reached me, I had with me a .learned young doctor from Rome. I told him about the quarrel between Shylock and Antonio. We studied many lawbooks and he knows what I would say. I ask you to let him stand in my place and give judgement. He is young, but I never knew so young a body with so wise a head."
After the letter has been read out to the court, Portia, in lawyer's clothes, enters the room and takes her seat as judge.

P: Mercy brings good. Mercy falls like the gentle rain from the sky upon the earth. It blesses those who give it, and those who receive it. We should learn to show mercy to others. Do you still ask for this pound of flesh? S: I ask for what is mine by law!
B: I offer ten times the money that Antonio has borrowed. Please change the law a little so that we may save Antonio.
P: Use your head a little, sir! We cannot change a law. If one law is changed, then people will later want to change other laws.
S: Oh, wise young judge!
P: Let me see this agreement, this promise of Antonio to you.
S: Here it is.
P: I see. According to the law, Shylock may have a pound of flesh to be cut off by him nearest to Antonio's heart. Be merciful! Let me destroy this paper.--No? Then, Antonio, be ready. And Shylock, take your knife and prepare to do the deed.

Shylock advances towards Antonio and prepares to use his knife.
P: Wait! There is something else. Antonio has promised to give you a pound of his flesh. But he has not promised to give you any of his blood. If you let one drop of his blood fall, you will lose all your land and all your money.
S: Is that the law?
P: That is the law. You wanted justice, so you shall get justice, more than you wanted. : I will take the money. Give me three more than Antonio borrowed from me.

Shylock turns and starts to leave the court.
P: Wait, Shylock. The law of Venice says that if anyone tries to kill or murder any citizen of Venice, everything that he owns shall be taken away from him. One half of his money and his goods shall be given to the city of Venice and the other half shall be given to the person he has tried to kill. His life shall be at the mercy of the Duke. therefore, go down on your knees and beg the Duke for mercy.
S: Good sir. I beg for mercy and beg your pardon..
D: I shall not have you killed. But as your punishment, half of your money is now Antonio's. You must give the other half to the city of Venice.
S: Take my life too! My money and goods are as dear to me as life itself. They are my only comfort. When you take those away from me, you also take my life.
A: I shall be happy to give up my part of Shylock's money. Shylock must promise to leave the money upon his death to his daughter and her husband.
S: I promise. Let me go home now. I am not well.

看到這里我們不得不對鮑西亞父親的睿智喝彩。其實，匣子反映的不僅是世人對金錢的看法，更是對一切事務的看法，金銀銅只不過是個比喻罷了，里頭的紙卷本身就是很好的詮釋。
現實生活中，我們看事物、評價人物不要只憑外表。金玉其外的橘子還不是敗絮其中么？一些富家子弟也只會穿金戴銀卻是不學無術的。所謂真人不露相啊，真正人才不必包裝入時，也不一定誇誇其談。「發閃光的不全是黃金」，這話沒錯，我同樣想到有關金子的一名話：「只要是金子終究是會發光的」。這就要我們擦亮雙眼，分清是內在金還是外在金了。

安東尼奧 我沒有多少話要說；我已經准備好了。把你的手給我，巴薩尼奧，再會吧！不要因為我為了你的緣故遭到這種結局而悲傷，因為命運對我已經特別照顧了：她往往讓一個不幸的人在家產盪盡以後繼續活下去，用他凹陷的眼睛和滿是皺紋的額角去挨受貧困的暮年；這一種拖延時日的刑罰，她已經把我豁免了。替我向尊夫人致意，告訴她安東尼奧的結局；對她說我怎樣愛你，又怎樣從容就死；等到你把這一段故事講完以後，再請她判斷一句，巴薩尼奧是不是曾經有過一個真心愛他的朋友。不要因為你將要失去一個朋友而懊恨，替你還債的人是死而無怨的；只要那猶太人的刀刺得深一點，我就可以在一剎那的時間把那筆債完全還清。
巴薩尼奧 安東尼奧，我愛我的妻子，就像我自己的生命一樣；可是我的生命、我的妻子以及整個的世界，在我的眼中都不比你的生命更為貴重；我願意喪失一切，把它們獻給這惡魔做犧牲，來救出你的生命。
鮑西婭 尊夫人要是就在這兒聽見您說這樣話，恐怕不見得會感謝您吧。
葛萊西安諾 我有一個妻子，我可以發誓我是愛她的；可是我希望她馬上歸天，好去求告上帝改變這惡狗一樣的猶太人的心。
尼莉莎 幸虧尊駕在她的背後說這樣的話，否則府上一定要吵得雞犬不寧了。
夏洛克 這些便是相信基督教的丈夫！我有一個女兒，我寧願她嫁給強盜的子孫，不願她嫁給一個基督徒，別再浪費光陰了；請快些兒宣判吧。
鮑西婭 那商人身上的一磅肉是你的；法庭判給你，法律許可你。
夏洛克 公平正直的法官！
鮑西婭 你必須從他的胸前割下這磅肉來；法律許可你，法庭判給你。
夏洛克 博學多才的法官！判得好！來，預備！
鮑西婭 且慢，還有別的話哩。這約上並沒有允許你取他的一滴血，只是寫明著「一磅肉」；所以你可以照約拿一磅肉去，可是在割肉的時候，要是流下一滴基督徒的血，你的土地財產，按照威尼斯的法律，就要全部充公。
葛萊西安諾 啊，公平正直的法官！聽著，猶太人；啊，博學多才的法官！
夏洛克 法律上是這樣說嗎？
鮑西婭 你自己可以去查查明白。既然你要求公道，我就給你公道，而且比你所要求的更地道。
葛萊西安諾 啊，博學多才的法官！聽著，猶太人；好一個博學多才的法官！
夏洛克 那麼我願意接受還款；照約上的數目三倍還我，放了那基督徒。

鮑西婭 所以你准備著動手割肉吧。不準流一滴血，也不準割得超過或是不足一磅的重量；要是你割下來的肉，比一磅略微輕一點或是重一點，即使相差只有一絲一毫，或者僅僅一根汗毛之微，就要把你抵命，你的財產全部充公。
葛萊西安諾 一個再世的但尼爾，一個但尼爾，猶太人！現在你可掉在我的手裡了，你這異教徒！
鮑西婭 那猶太人為什麼還不動手？
夏洛克 把我的本錢還我，放我去吧。
巴薩尼奧 錢我已經預備好在這兒，你拿去吧。

夏洛克 難道我單單拿回我的本錢都不成嗎？
鮑西婭 猶太人，除了冒著你自己生命的危險割下那一磅肉以外，你不能拿一個錢。
夏洛克 好，那麼魔鬼保佑他去享用吧！我不打這場官司了。
鮑西婭 等一等，猶太人，法律上還有一點牽涉你。威尼斯的法律規定：凡是一個異邦人企圖用直接或間接手段，謀害任何公民，查明確有實據者，他的財產的半數應當歸受害的一方所有，其餘的半數沒入公庫，犯罪者的生命悉聽公爵處置，他人不得過問。你現在剛巧陷入這一條法網，因為根據事實的發展，已經足以證明你確有運用直接間接手段，危害被告生命的企圖，所以你已經遭逢著我剛才所說起的那種危險了。快快跪下來，請公爵開恩吧。
葛萊西安諾 求公爵開恩，讓你自己去尋死吧；可是你的財產現在充了公，一根繩子也買不起啦，所以還是要讓公家破費把你弔死。
公爵 讓你瞧瞧我們基督徒的精神，你雖然沒有向我開口，我自動饒恕了你的死罪。你的財產一半劃歸安東尼奧，還有一半沒入公庫；要是你能夠誠心悔過，也許還可以減處你一筆較輕的罰款。
鮑西婭 這是說沒入公庫的一部分，不是說劃歸安東尼奧的一部分。
夏洛克 不，把我的生命連著財產一起拿了去吧，我不要你們的寬恕。你們拿掉了支撐房子的柱子，就是拆了我的房子；你們奪去了我的養家活命的根本，就是活活要了我的命。
鮑西婭 安東尼奧，你能不能夠給他一點慈悲？
葛萊西安諾 白送給他一根上吊的繩子吧；看在上帝的面上，不要給他別的東西！
安東尼奧 要是殿下和堂上願意從寬發落，免予沒收他的財產的一半，我就十分滿足了；只要他能夠讓我接管他的另外一半的財產，等他死了以後，把它交給最近和他的女兒私奔的那位紳士；可是還要有兩個附帶的條件：第一，他接受了這樣的恩典，必須立刻改信基督教；第二，他必須當庭寫下一張文契，聲明他死了以後，他的全部財產傳給他的女婿羅蘭佐和他的女兒。
公爵 他必須履行這兩個條件，否則我就撤銷剛才所宣布的赦令。
鮑西婭 猶太人，你滿意嗎？你有什麼話說？
夏洛克 我滿意。
鮑西婭 書記，寫下一張授贈產業的文契。
夏洛克 請你們允許我退庭，我身子不大舒服。文契寫好了送到我家裡，我在上面簽名就是了。
公爵 去吧，可是臨時變卦是不成的。
葛萊西安諾 你在受洗禮的時候，可以有兩個教父；要是我做了法官，我一定給你請十二個教父⑿，不是領你去受洗，是送你上絞架。（夏洛克下。）

鮑西婭 請殿下多多原諒，我今天晚上要回帕度亞去，必須現在就動身，恕不奉陪了。
公爵 您這樣貴忙，不能容我略盡寸心，真是抱歉得很。安東尼奧，謝謝這位先生，你這回全虧了他。（公爵、眾士紳及侍從等下。）
巴薩尼奧 最可尊敬的先生，我跟我這位敝友今天多賴您的智慧，免去了一場無妄之災；為了表示我們的敬意，這三千塊錢本來是預備還那猶太人的，現在就奉送給先生，聊以報答您的辛苦。
安東尼奧 您的大恩大德，我們是永遠不忘記的。
鮑西婭 一個人做了心安理得的事，就是得到了最大的酬報；我這次幫兩位的忙，總算沒有失敗，已經引為十分滿足，用不著再談什麼酬謝了。但願咱們下次見面的時候，兩位仍舊認識我。現在我就此告辭了。
巴薩尼奧 好先生，我不能不再向您提出一個請求，請您隨便從我們身上拿些什麼東西去，不算是酬謝，只算是留個紀念。請您答應我兩件事兒：既不要推卻，還要原諒我的要求。
鮑西婭 你們這樣殷勤，倒叫我卻之不恭了。（向安東尼奧）把您的手套送給我，讓我戴在手上留個紀念吧；（向巴薩尼奧）為了紀念您的盛情，讓我拿了這戒指去。不要縮回您的手，我不再向您要什麼了；您既然是一片誠意，想來總也不會拒絕我吧。
巴薩尼奧 這指環嗎，好先生？唉！它是個不值錢的玩意兒；我不好意思把這東西送給您。
鮑西婭 我什麼都不要，就是要這指環；現在我想我非把它要來不可了。
巴薩尼奧 這指環的本身並沒有什麼價值，可是因為有其他的關系，我不能把它送人。我願意搜訪威尼斯最貴重的一枚指環來送給您，可是這一枚卻只好請您原諒了。
鮑西婭 先生，您原來是個口頭上慷慨的人；您先教我怎樣伸手求討，然後再教我懂得了一個叫化子會得到怎樣的回答。
巴薩尼奧 好先生，這指環是我的妻子給我的；她把它套上我的手指的時候，曾經叫我發誓永遠不把它出賣、送人或是遺失。
鮑西婭 人們在吝惜他們的禮物的時候，都可以用這樣的話做推託的。要是尊夫人不是一個瘋婆子，她知道了我對於這指環是多麼受之無愧，一定不會因為您把它送掉了而跟您長久反目的。好，願你們平安！（鮑西婭、尼莉莎同下。）
安東尼奧 我的巴薩尼奧少爺，讓他把那指環拿去吧；看在他的功勞和我的交情份上，違犯一次尊夫人的命令，想來不會有什麼要緊。
巴薩尼奧 葛萊西安諾，你快追上他們，把這指環送給他；要是可能的話，領他到安東尼奧的家裡去。去，趕快！（葛萊西安諾下）來，我就陪著你到你府上；明天一早咱們兩人就飛到貝爾蒙特去。來，安東尼奧。（同下。）
