High School Musical was Disney Channel's most watched movie at its time, with 7.7 million viewers in its premiere broadcast in the US. In the UK, it received 789,000 viewers for its premiere (and 1.2 million viewers overall ring the first week), making it the second most watched program for the Disney Channel (UK) of 2006. It was also the first ever Disney Channel Original Movie to be broadcast on the BBC on December 29, 2006. The film's soundtrack was the best-selling album in the United States for 2006.
With a plot described by the author and numerous critics as a modern adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, High School Musical is a story about two high school juniors from rival cliques – Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), a beautiful and shy transfer student who excels in math and science. Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical, and as a result, divide the school. Despite other students' attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella resist peer pressure and rivalry, inspiring others along the way not to "stick with the status quo."
High School Musical was filmed at East High School located in Salt Lake City, Utah, the auditorium of Murray High School, & Downtown Salt Lake City. 劇情
三年的時間匆匆一過，前兩集內經歷了諸多風風雨雨的特洛伊（扎克·埃夫隆飾）和加百利（瓦妮莎·安妮·哈金斯飾），如今也面臨著各奔東西的局面。雖然說兩人非常希望能夠繼續在一間大學就讀，延續著他們的感情，可惜無論是家人還是自己的志向，在這一點都分歧頗大，特洛伊倒是願意遷就加百利，但偏偏加百利又覺得學業為重，不應該因為兒女私情而耽誤彼此的前途，因為這個原因，兩人也免不了多多少少的爭吵。
吵架歸吵架，但是時間總歸是不等人的，畢業在即，兩人都明白很可能將來無法再維系這份感情。特洛伊回想起兩人的緣分的開始，皆因那場校園歌唱比賽，因此他懇求加百利與自己再排練一場音樂劇，為這段感情添上一個完美的注腳。而加百利也欣然應允，兩人在音樂劇的排練過程中笑料百出，不過除此之外，特洛伊和加百利也開始重新審視這段感情。
東部高中的籃球賽——最後的冠軍杯拉開帷幕，特洛伊認真備戰，加百利作為拉拉隊員也到場上為特洛伊打氣；畢業舞會上，兩人再次牽手，演繹一場漂亮絕美的華麗舞蹈；辛苦排練的音樂劇正式公映，兩人在劇內牽手約定，劇外的特洛伊和加百利也發現，沒有什麼能夠比得上和對方在一起相守廝老更重要。於是特洛伊做出了一個他人生里最重要的決定……

幕後製作
順利開機的《歌舞青春3》
2007年2月，在前兩集《歌舞青春》大受歡迎的情況下，迪士尼公司宣布了將在2008年推出《歌舞青春》的第三集這一計劃，並且宣布影片會以萬聖節為故事主線。但是到了2007年9月時，迪士尼公司又宣布放棄了萬聖節這一設想，取而代之的是幾個主人公在東部高中的畢業之年。這部影片幾乎重新囊括了前兩集主創的原班人馬。從導演、製作人到主演大家一呼百應，全都回到了新一集的拍攝隊伍中。
主演扎克·埃夫隆在接受采訪時表示對於影片充滿了信心，「我可以告訴你如果劇本沒問題，如果我們所有人都已經答應會繼續出演這部影片，那麼就沒有什麼能夠阻止我們了。在拍攝這些影片時我們都非常開心，這在其它工作中幾乎是不可能的。」盡管有了這番言論，但是外界針對迪士尼和這部影片的幾位主演，特別是扎克本人，關於片酬難以達成一致的傳言卻一直不曾消散。有報道說好萊塢內部的人士認為迪士尼試圖在08年的好萊塢編劇大罷工和演員大罷工之前就和主要演員簽訂協議，扎克應該要求得到高達5百萬美元的片酬才會接演《畢業季》，對於這樣的傳言扎克不予置評。
整個影片的預算為1300萬美元，用了40天的拍攝周期，這在青春片市場中已經算得上是大製作了。影片於2008年1月進入前期製作階段，2月份在美國猶他州的鹽湖城開機。在影片正式開機前，主創們在鹽湖城的東部高中舉辦了一次媒體見面會作為開機儀式。幸運的是，劇本在好萊塢編劇大罷工之前已經定稿，這樣影片在大罷工活動正酣時就已經進入了音樂的製作階段。影片最終定於2008年10月24日、萬聖節前一周與美國觀眾在大銀幕上見面。導演肯尼表示，這將是上兩部的主要演員們最後一次聚齊在《歌舞青春》中，因為隨著劇情的發展，他們都要「畢業」了。
從熒屏走向銀幕
在美國，《歌舞青春》系列被冠上了「新美國甜心」、「青春神話」等等一系列的名號，學生們稱它為「HSM」，儼然已經成為了一個新的流行詞彙。據統計，這部影片在已經被超過4.5億人觀看過，相當於全球十五分之一的人都曾經觀看了這部影片的某一集。對於一部青春片、而且僅是迪士尼頻道的電視電影來說，這幾乎是一個奇跡。由影片帶動的衍生商品的銷量更是驚人，DVD的發行量超過1500萬，電影原聲音樂的發行量1300萬，還有1000萬的主題音樂會的票房收入。這一切都發生在這兩部電視電影身上，確實有些不可思議。現在的《歌舞青春》已經不再只是一部系列電影的名字，而成為了迪士尼公司一個每年都創造出極大收益的著名品牌。
在去年《歌舞青春2》的收視率再破迪士尼頻道的記錄之後，迪斯尼公司終於肯定第三集已經准備好進入大銀幕了。「他們終於有了一個商業上的決定而不是藝術上的決定。」製作人比爾·伯頓這樣評價，事實上，在他製作《歌舞青春》和《歌舞青春2》的時候，他都曾經試圖說服公司讓影片進入院線發行。而導演肯尼·奧特加還考慮過要把《歌舞青春3》變成3D電影，「但很可惜我沒有得到任何熱情的回應。」盡管沒有實現3D電影的想法，《歌舞青春3》要上大銀幕的消息還是給它的眾多年輕粉絲帶來了極大的喜悅。「我們的優勢在於我們知道誰是我們的觀眾，」迪士尼的製作總監奧然·艾威（Oren Aviv）這樣說，「他們對於這部影片非常地狂熱、非常地忠實。」
新鮮血液與主演的難忘經歷
在影片開拍前，迪士尼公司為《歌舞青春3》增加的幾個新角色在美國、加拿大和英國展開了一場聲勢浩大的選角活動，成千上萬的年輕人參加了這次試鏡。最終有三個幸運兒脫穎而出，其中就包括英國的電視明星簡瑪·麥肯茲-布朗。在英國已經小有成就的她回憶起自己在聽到入選了《歌舞青春3》時的情景，「我尖叫著跑出了房子，我奶奶著急地問我到底發生了什麼事，我說沒事沒事，我就是太激動了。」她在影片中扮演一個從英國來的轉學生，並且在東部高中成為了莎佩的私人助理。簡瑪承認當她第一次進入劇組，和其中已經成為明星的主演們共同工作時感到有些緊張，但是他們友好的態度很快就消除了她的這種心情。「他們對我們這幾個新來的非常照顧，很快就把我們納入他們的團隊，如果拍完了戲他們在其中某個人的房間里聊天，也會特意給我們打電話或是發簡訊叫我們一起去。」到現在，簡瑪還是認為能夠加入到這個團隊中去是她一生中難得的好運氣。導演肯尼對於簡瑪和其他幾個新成員的評價也非常高，認為他們給劇組注入了新鮮的血液。
