《斷臂山》最初刊登在《紐約客》（New Yorker ）雜志上，並獲得了1998年國家雜志獎（the National Magazine Award） 以及歐·亨利滑辯小說獎（the O. Henry Stories）。 Proulx以細膩輪悉動人的筆調描繪了兩個牛仔間一段世俗難容的情事。
故事發生於1961年的德克薩斯州和懷俄明州，農夫Jack和牛仔Ennis邂逅，孤單寂寞讓兩個不到二十歲的少年互相愛上了對方。他們在篝火邊長談，在帳篷里歡愛。一個人做飯，另一個去放羊，總是早早起床， 推一推還在熟睡的另一個，道一聲明天見，就騎馬沖進寒冷的夜裡……雖然彼此真心相應，但是迫於世俗壓力, 他們各自結婚生子，只能每年在一起度假。隨著年齡的增長，兩人的感情愈加濃厚熾烈，無法滿足一年只有幾天的團聚。可是懷俄明的牛仔們嘲笑同性戀，還會用各種方法折磨他們，這讓Ennis沒有勇氣承認和接受與Jack共同生活。
