黛安·英格利什以前主要在电视界发展，是备受赞誉的情景喜剧《风云女郎》的编剧兼制片人。1994年，她读到了一篇关于乔治·库克的《女人们》应该被重拍的评论性文章，就是这篇文章激发了她的兴趣引起了她的深思。“我清楚地记得那部老版的电影，也记得当时看到有那么多特别有名的女演员在一部电影中出现时的激动，最让我觉得有趣的就是整部电影看不到任何一个男人的面孔。”黛安·英格利什回忆道，“但同时我也意识到这部影片里一些比较过时的观点应该被更新。”就这样，黛安·英格利什重拍上个世纪经典喜剧《女人们》的初衷便形成了。经过一番努力，这个愿望终于得以实现，这也是英格利什的导演处女作。
与1939年的《女人们》比较起来，黛安·英格利什导演的新版《女人们》将会有新的时代特征。英格丽什在反应女人们生活变化的同时，保留了原版《女人们》中对女人智慧、生活格调和时而缺乏礼貌教养的描绘。如果说乔治·库克的电影显示出他对当时社会中“都市女人”的憎恶的话，那么黛安·英格利什的电影则更多的在强调现代都市女人浪漫、感性的一面，并站在欣赏的立场全方位多层次的展现了现代“多面夏娃”的魅力。
新版塑造独立女性
新版《女人们》里的女人更加具有立体感。她们具有专业精神，个个都是本行当里的行家里手；她们经济独立，精神自主，无论是已婚的还是独身的，她们都能够在自己的世界里找到乐趣、保持进取意识并且懂得自我保护。新版以乐观的态度和“以小见大”的方式道出了女人们的酸甜苦辣。
身兼编剧和导演两职的黛安·英格利什表示，“新版剧本和1939版的《女人们》将矛头直接指向了当时的都市女性，影射她们在男人背后极尽互相诋毁之能事，而要做到这一点，女人们的狡黠、很深的城府、难以置信的快反应和务实的智慧都被表露无遗……但我在构思新版电影时却不得不避开这一点，因为我欣赏女性，以赞赏的角度来重新演绎都市女性，同时也想将原著所具有的精髓进行保留，比如女人的智慧和聪明。”
黛安·英格利什的电影里保留了老版电影的基本框架，围绕已婚妇女玛丽·海恩斯发现先生感情出轨这条主线展开女人们的故事，但黛安·英格利什将这条线延展了，把女人们的范围扩大到了玛丽的“姐妹淘”以及亲人，并且交待了更多的问题留给我们反思：代沟、婚姻问题及性取向。
也许是用批评的眼光在挑剔乔治·库克的《女人们》，黛安·英格利什重新塑造了玛丽·海恩斯最好的朋友——西尔维亚·福勒这个人物的性格。在乔治·库克的电影里，西尔维亚是一个彻头彻尾的“八卦女”，喜欢到处搜集和散布小道消息。而英格利什却把西尔维亚变成了一本顶尖杂志的编辑、一个乐观的单身女性、玛丽自大学以来的闺蜜。
根据自己的见解，英格利什解释道：“我打算把这部影片改编成为两个坦率女人之间的关于爱的故事。而不像原著那样仅仅纠缠于玛丽是否该与背叛她的先生和解。在我的版本里，我希望观众能更多的关注玛丽是否应该与她的闺密西尔维亚和解，这个因为自己的事业而出卖朋友信任的人。”
1939版的《女人们》里有接近130个女性角色，还有无数猫猫狗狗被作为道具充实背景，但无论如何也找不到男人的背影。2008版的《女人们》依然保持了这个作风，不管黛安·英格利什对这部翻拍的电影动了多大手术，有一个禁区是无论如何也不能碰触的，那就是不能让任何一个男人的脸出现在电影里。
