  20世纪50年代，为庆祝新中国成立10周年，上海实验歌剧院创作演出了民族舞剧《小刀会》，它是上海也是全国第一部反映革命历史题材的大型舞剧。舞剧《小刀会》

  该剧分"起义"、"胜利"、"抗议"、"夜袭"、"求援"、"突围"、"决战"等七场，艺术地再现了19世纪中叶发生在上海地区的"小刀会"农民起义的战斗历程，讴歌了中国人民反帝反封建武装斗争的奋斗精神。该舞剧结构具有中国章回小说传统元素，舞蹈语言以中国古典舞语言为主体，辅以江南地域特色的民间舞加以穿插，营造情景、强化个性、渲染色彩。剧中多段独舞、双人舞也颇具特色，而"弓舞"、"大鼓凉舞"、"倒花兰"、"盾牌舞"、"小刀舞"等群舞，更堪称令人过目难忘的精彩舞段。

  《小刀会》音乐创造了"主题贯穿发展和曲牌联接相结合"的样式，音乐素材大多取自中国戏曲音乐和江南民间音乐，剧中不论戏剧性音乐，还是色彩性音乐，尤其主要人物的音乐形象都十分鲜明。该舞台美术也有独到之处，黄浦江水波荡漾动感场景，采用的新技术在国内尚属首次。
