哈拉德军队已经抵达了帕兰诺平原，并且使用猛犸展开对洛汗骑兵的攻击，骑兵损失惨重，此时安格玛巫王也来到战场，他先杀掉了洛汗国王希优顿，但自己也被国王的侄女伊欧玟杀掉。在刚铎与洛汗接近崩溃之时，阿拉贡率领的亡灵军队在渡口登陆。

强大的亡灵军队覆盖了帕兰诺平原和米那斯提力斯，全歼半兽人军队和哈拉德人，在西里斯昂哥，山姆救出了佛罗多，两人继续踏上旅程。在接近末日山脉之际，佛罗多的身体愈来愈虚弱，山姆则一直在旁照顾他。

在魔戒被摧毁的同时，几乎在黑门取得胜利的索伦军队瞬间瓦解，巴拉多塔倒塌，欧洛都因火山爆发，魔多化为火海。佛罗多和山姆险些丧命，幸得关赫的帮助，两人被带到瑞文戴尔，而佛罗多已神志不清。

在瑞文戴尔，佛罗多苏醒过来。不久，曾经的远征队聚集在米那斯提力斯，参加阿拉贡的加冕礼。尽管任务已经完成，但佛罗多身体和心灵受到的创伤并未康复。新的纪元就要到来，而中土的精灵也准备离开中土，前往维林诺。
