“熵”是理解《信条》一个很核心的概念，它的物理意义是体系混乱程度的度量。正常的自然规律下，事物遵循的是“熵增”原理，即粒子从有序向着无序发展。比如常温下一个面包只会从新鲜到腐烂，而不会反过来。但《信条》在科学基础上假想了“逆熵”这一情形，在一个“逆熵”的时空中，这里的时间规律不是从有序到无序、从过去到未来，而是从无序到有序、从未来到过去，面包从腐烂变成新鲜，飞去出的子弹按原轨迹回到弹匣。

《信条》中，一个人通过时间机器可以进入一个“逆熵”状态，不断倒回到过去。通俗地理解，《信条》隶属于科幻电影中很大的一个分支：时间旅行。《信条》的故事底本是一个特工通过时间旅行执行任务，有人想要借助时间旅行毁灭世界，主人公所隶属的TENET肩负拯救世界的使命。
只不过有了逆熵的设定，《信条》中的时间旅行与以往我们所熟悉的时间旅行电影有所不同。常见的时间旅行叙事主要是这两种，一种是《十二猴子》（1995）、《环形使者》（2012）、《前目的地》（2014）等的环形叙事，主人公进入时间的河流，回到过去想要逆转未来，却发现“The future is history”（《十二猴子》），无论几次重回过去，时间的河流不可逆转。另外一种是《时空线索》（2007）、《源代码》（2011）、《明日边缘》（2014）这一类型的，时间呈分岔式，主人公回到过去就可能产生截然不同的结果。
相对而言，这两种时间旅行都较好理解，因为无论主人公第几次回到过去，过去时空的运行规则与当下一模一样，无论是主人公还是观众都不会有接受上的难度。
《信条》与它们截然不同。它的时间旅行是基于逆熵，这就包涵了至少两个层面的不同。第一个层面，逆熵世界的运行规则与当下的世界是反着来的，人是逆着走，车是倒着开，打架动作是反着来，时间往回流，果成了因。当主人公经由时间机器进入逆熵状态，他的行为仍然是正向，但整个世界在倒流。这形成强烈的陌生化效应，不仅电影中的主人公感到懵逼，观众也是头一回在电影中看到如此奇观。

第二个层面，就是逆转时间的逻辑。以往的时间穿越电影对此大多语焉不详或者简单带过，创作者并未把它当做一个“问题”来深究。于是你看《明日边缘》中阿汤哥饰演的凯奇少校倏忽地就回到了过去。但《信条》中，怎么回到过去、想要回到过去哪一个点背后，有一套相当复杂、缜密又严谨的逻辑体系。
电影中的时间机器，有红、蓝两边，中间隔着透明玻璃。红进蓝出，是从熵增进入逆熵，时间逆流；蓝进红出，是从逆熵进入熵增，时间正向流动。
时间机器也不能让你想回到过去哪个点就回到哪一个点。举一个容易理解的例子。今天下午三点你参加了一场考试，下午五点结束，但你失利了，只考了60分，你事后知道了答案，想考个100分。现在是下午五点，你想回到两个小时前，也即下午三点重新考试。你从时间机器进入逆熵状态，不是一下子回到两个小时前，而是你得老老实实跟着时间倒流两个小时，这时你看到的世界也是反着来的，你得戴上特殊口罩才能呼吸。倒流两个小时后，你再从时间机器的蓝门穿过红门，进入熵增状态，你就回到了下午三点，世界的运行是常态化的，你开始“第二次”考试。
