早就想写这一篇关于外国电影名经典翻译的文章了。优秀的翻译之于原文及影片,就好像葱花之于葱油泼面那么重要。你还别说,文字的魅力对人的影响就是那么大,同一个意思,不同的表达方式,收获的结果就可能天差地别。同理,电影的名字是影片剧情的概括与升华,起得不好,票房惨败颗粒无收也是有的。以下片名翻译按优秀程度递减排列,当然,这只是我一家之见,不服……憋着。
1. 魂断蓝桥( Waterloo Bridge , 1940 年)
这是我心目中永远的No.1,迄今为止,我再未见过比它更经典、更贴切的片名翻译了!我第一次看《魂断蓝桥》是中央台的译制片,当时不知道其英文名,看过影片后,觉得片名也就是恰如其分。后来得知原名是Waterloo Bridge,我立刻被惊艳到了!
首先,如果译为《滑铁卢桥》,从翻译角度看,当然没有错,但会让人以为这是一部战争片或关于拿破仑的历史人物传记,影院绝对会失去一大部分女性观众和情侣档;在中国,这部在西方大放异彩的片子也很有可能夭折,而不会成为传颂已久的爱情经典片。
其次,这个Bridge为什么是蓝桥而不是其他桥呢?蓝桥取自于陕西民间传说“蓝桥相会”,讲的是唐代秀才裴航冲破世俗偏见,不顾门第高低,不同流俗,执着追求绩麻姑娘云英(后来发现是仙女),通过不懈努力最终与之结成百年之好的故事。同样是不门当户对的爱情,蓝桥相会以喜剧收尾,而影片中则以女主角在滑铁卢桥上与列车相撞自杀身亡结束——魂断蓝桥,再贴切不过了。
最后,如果你讲白话或者粤语,你就会知道,“魂断蓝”三个字的白话或粤语读音与Waterloo的英文发音相近——这就是白话版的音译啊,而且与剧情结合得如此浑然天成、天衣无缝!再没有哪部电影名的翻译能达到这样的高度了。每次看到,我都想把膝盖献给那位不知名的译者,为Ta的智慧与文采,以及对我持续而长久的启迪和影响。
2. 她比烟花寂寞( Hilary and Jackie , 1998 年)
我知道这部影片完全是因为师太(亦舒)的同名小说《她比烟花寂寞》,应该说,电影片名借用了小说的名字,因为小说在1996年已经出版。片名已经完全脱离英文原名,纯粹是电影主题的浓缩升华,然而十分准确,直击灵魂。光看名字,就能猜出说的大概是什么样的故事,看影片前大约会准备好纸巾。
师太的小说写的是一个电影明星生前灿烂辉煌,身后却寂寞无比,去世时候连遗产都没人接收;而她毕生所愿不过是像普通人那样结婚生子吵闹而庸俗的过完一生。这个平凡无奇的心愿,终究没能实现。就像烟花,绽放时璀璨夺目,背后却是无边的黑与寂寞。电影与之同名,其实很有道理。主人公同样是烟花般绚烂的一生,同样生前风光无限,对爱却始终求而不得。求而不得,人生至苦。
影片的其他译名有狂恋大提琴、中断的琴声、希拉里和杰基、希拉莉和积琪琳。所谓没有比较,就没有伤害。这些译名不算错,但都不如烟花那样意味隽永,余音绕梁。
3. 蝴蝶梦( Rebecca , 1940 年)
《蝴蝶梦》原名《吕蓓卡》,吕蓓卡是影片中实质性的女主角——尽管一开篇她已然是个死人,但音容宛在,庄园里处处都是她的印迹。她的幽灵通过死忠女管家继续控制着她的家、她的丈夫以及新任女主人,直至一切毁灭。对于新来的女主人,这段经历就像一场斑斓而阴森的梦,醒来之后,只余追忆。
翻译成蝴蝶梦当然比吕蓓卡更有魅力。对于初次接触的观众而言,吕蓓卡只是一个女性的名字,除此之外,我们一无所知,且没有浮想联翩的欲望。蝴蝶梦,就算你不知道“庄生晓梦迷蝴蝶”,光从字面也能模糊的体验到诸如凄美、幻灭、遗憾之类的感觉。这三个字的组合,于我而言,有着不可描述的、令人着迷的魔力。

5. 春风化雨( Dead Poets Society , 1989 年)
其实我很想把春风化雨排在第四,但因为末路狂花结尾太令人心痛和震撼,以至于觉得片名都带着血色(果然是谁惨谁胜出么……),所以忍痛让春风排在第五。Dead Poets Society原来译为“死亡诗社”,乍一看我还以为是我最心水的悬疑恐怖片,看了之后才知道讲的是一个老师通过言传身教潜移默化,帮助禁锢在传统守旧教条框框内的学生们解放思想、领悟自由与生命真谛的故事(里面将将18岁的伊桑·霍克真是帅到忧伤)。
一直以来,外语片名的翻译大部分都是大陆胜出(至少在以前是如此),香港译名总是带着浓厚的市井或江湖味,台湾的翻译多是流于艳俗。然而在本片,台湾译的“春风化雨”远胜其他两地,栩栩如生的提炼了影片主题和主角形象。对比香港译为“暴雨骄阳”,还有“壮志骄阳”,港真,不知道是什么鬼!
6. 绿野仙踪( The Wizard of OZ , 1939 年)

说实话,这种有妇之夫才子与红颜才女相识恨晚相恋,原配欲大度退出成全,然而才(小)女(三)良心发现,浪(渣)子(男)回归家庭的故事——如果不是有那么多流芳百世的作品加持,也就是碗狗血——当然,本片的碗比较华丽。
尽管如此,我仍幸庆因为片名而去观影——那首《当我们年轻时》,猝不及防就让当时的我遭到了一万点的心灵暴击:当我们还年轻,在美妙的五月早晨,你曾说:你爱我,当我们还年轻。
五月的早晨,像朝露、像夕阳、像最珍贵的青春,美好却易逝,唯有爱可以永不磨灭。
8. 乱世佳人( Gone with the wind , 1940 年)
说来惭愧,直到上高中我才拜读了赫赫有名的《飘》,上大学才看到根据书改编的电影《乱世佳人》。一般来说,如果先读了原著,后面再看根据其拍出的电影或电视剧,总会觉得后者不如前者——文字留给读者的脑补空间远远超过具体的影像。你在看书时,你的脑海里会形成你所希望的书中的主人公的形象,书里描述的一切细节,也会带有你根深蒂固的个人风格。但是《乱世佳人》完全没有输给原作,因为费雯·丽和克拉克·盖博正是我心目中的郝思嘉和白瑞特,尤其是费雯·丽的眼睛和气质,和书里描写的一模一样:“帽上长长的翠绿色飘带映衬着她那亮绿灵动的双眸……她是降落人间的精灵——纯洁又邪恶的迷人精灵。”这大概得归因于演员超群的演技。
Gone with the wind的中文书名译为《飘》,电影名译为《乱世佳人》,都非常棒。书是经典名著,书名要言简意赅,又要具备意味深长、耐人寻味的特点。一个“飘”字道尽了英文原名和书的精髓。在大型战争面前,个人的命运就如同被风刮下的落叶,背井离乡,流落四方,但最终会回到坚实的大地上。影片要卖座,就得尽可能吸引不同口味的观众,雅俗共赏。在艳俗的“佳人”前面放个“乱世”,立刻有了沉重和悲壮感,并且也概括了影片主要内容,真是极好的(甄嬛附体…)。相比之下,直译为《随风而逝》就显得中庸且不知所云了。
9. 廊桥遗梦( The Bridge of Madison County , 1994 年)
The Bridge ofMadison County译为“廊桥遗梦”充分体现了我国文化的博大精深。一开始,我也不知道为啥将“麦迪逊桥”翻译成“廊桥”,直到我看到影片中的桥——有顶的桥,可不就是中国的廊桥么——有房檐的桥。当然,麦迪逊的桥要比咱们精雕细刻的廊桥逊多了。“遗梦”用来形容缠绵悱恻而不能圆满的爱情再合适不过了。廊桥与遗梦的组合绝不仅是故事发生之地与故事结局的简单概括,它所包含的深意.....你懂的。
10. 人鬼情未了( Ghost , 1990 年)
与前面神作相比,其实《人鬼情未了》这个翻译并不是那么出彩,但是奈何队友太坑爹啊——其他的译名有《幽灵》以及《把妹把到鬼》——差点让我笑出八块腹肌。尤其是想到影片讲述的是一个凄美深情的人鬼爱情时,配上这么个二货的片名,真是很有反差萌啊~~
其他的佳作还有 风月俏佳人( PrettyWoman )、闻香识女人( Scentof a Woman )、月色撩人( Moonstruck )、深闺疑云( Suspicion )、壮志凌云( Top Gum )、出水芙蓉( Bath Beauty )、红菱艳( The Red Shoes )等 。但于我而言,感触都没有前10个那么多,就不写啦。
这些影片最新的,距今也快有20年,感觉那时的翻译者对作品不止于“准确”这一标准,他们把电影吃透,力求做到信、达、雅,带给观众艺术般的体验。如今不知是我看电影看少了,还是翻译水准下降,总之,再没有见过令我眼前一亮且怦然心动的片名了(惆怅脸)。
