本片根据柯奈尔·乌尔里奇1947年发表的小说《黑暗中的华尔兹》改编而成，是一部关于爱与欲望的黑色激情悬疑片，故事背景发生在充满异国风情的古巴，但由于政治原因，外景地设在了墨西哥。导演迈克尔·克里斯托弗曾执导过探讨现代年轻人两性关系的影片《激情代价》（Body Shots），此前他还与女主角安吉丽娜·朱丽合作过电视电影《吉娅》，这部片子为朱丽捧回了1999年金球奖电视电影类最佳女主角奖。
师出名门的安吉丽娜·朱丽是好莱坞后起之秀中的佼佼者，2000年因成功出演了《失魂少女》中的精神病女郎而勇夺奥斯卡最佳女配角奖。本片是她继《失魂少女》之后推出的首部作品，朱丽另外一部倍受瞩目的作品《古幕丽影》将在今年7月上映，心急的影迷可以先看看本片，领略她狂野而奔放不羁的魅力。
本片的男主角是有“拉丁情人”之称的安东尼奥·班德拉斯，机智、幽默、略显脆弱的表演，连同他身上非美国化的个人魅力，使他成为观众心目中的性感偶像和最佳男演员之一。《原罪》是他和朱丽的首次合作，两人因在片中的大胆激情演出还传出过假戏真做的绯闻，但两人毕竟各有家室，在众目睽睽下演亲热戏，还是应该有些分寸的嘛。或许连他们都没料到自己会演得这么投入，以致招来了负面反应。
从影片的宣传照上看，朱丽与班德拉斯赤裸缠绵的镜头确实非常煽情，让人脸红心跳，而片中一场两人在浴缸里的激情戏，更是被米高梅公司高层认为过分大胆暴露，决定动刀删剪，以避免影片太过色情，通不过MPAA的检查。之后朱丽表示对米高梅的这种宣传伎俩十分不满，其实片中百分之九十左右的戏都属“斯文镜头”，米高梅此举实属误导观众.
