影片改编自大卫·尼克尔森的同名小说，小说展现一段感情在长时间洗礼中的起起落落。大卫·尼克尔森用了2年多的时间完成小说的创作，前期需要很长的准备过程就像完成一幅拼图。

想好每个7月15日那天发生的事，小说中人物对话和虚构情节很多，这也使得这部小说本身就带有电影性质。在影片的制片人妮娜·雅各布森读了这部小说后，便决定将小说改编成电影剧本，并搬上大银幕。

影片的制片人邀请到了《成长教育》的导演罗勒·莎菲来执导这部电影，影片的编剧由原著小说的作者大卫·尼克尔森来担任。
