With a plot described by the author and numerous critics as a modern adaptation of Romeo & Juliet, High School Musical is a story about two high school juniors from rival cliques – Troy Bolton (Zac Efron), captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens), a beautiful and shy transfer student who excels in math and science. Together, they try out for the lead parts in their high school musical, and as a result, divide the school. 剧情
三年的时间匆匆一过，前两集内经历了诸多风风雨雨的特洛伊（扎克·埃夫隆饰）和加百利（瓦妮莎·安妮·哈金斯饰），如今也面临着各奔东西的局面。虽然说两人非常希望能够继续在一间大学就读，延续着他们的感情，可惜无论是家人还是自己的志向，在这一点都分歧颇大，特洛伊倒是愿意迁就加百利，但偏偏加百利又觉得学业为重，不应该因为儿女私情而耽误彼此的前途，因为这个原因，两人也免不了多多少少的争吵。
吵架归吵架，但是时间总归是不等人的，毕业在即，两人都明白很可能将来无法再维系这份感情。特洛伊回想起两人的缘分的开始，皆因那场校园歌唱比赛，因此他恳求加百利与自己再排练一场音乐剧，为这段感情添上一个完美的注脚。而加百利也欣然应允，两人在音乐剧的排练过程中笑料百出，不过除此之外，特洛伊和加百利也开始重新审视这段感情。
东部高中的篮球赛——最后的冠军杯拉开帷幕，特洛伊认真备战，加百利作为拉拉队员也到场上为特洛伊打气；毕业舞会上，两人再次牵手，演绎一场漂亮绝美的华丽舞蹈；辛苦排练的音乐剧正式公映，两人在剧内牵手约定，剧外的特洛伊和加百利也发现，没有什么能够比得上和对方在一起相守厮老更重要。于是特洛伊做出了一个他人生里最重要的决定……

幕后制作
顺利开机的《歌舞青春3》
2007年2月，在前两集《歌舞青春》大受欢迎的情况下，迪士尼公司宣布了将在2008年推出《歌舞青春》的第三集这一计划，并且宣布影片会以万圣节为故事主线。但是到了2007年9月时，迪士尼公司又宣布放弃了万圣节这一设想，取而代之的是几个主人公在东部高中的毕业之年。这部影片几乎重新囊括了前两集主创的原班人马。从导演、制作人到主演大家一呼百应，全都回到了新一集的拍摄队伍中。
主演扎克·埃夫隆在接受采访时表示对于影片充满了信心，“我可以告诉你如果剧本没问题，如果我们所有人都已经答应会继续出演这部影片，那么就没有什么能够阻止我们了。在拍摄这些影片时我们都非常开心，这在其它工作中几乎是不可能的。”尽管有了这番言论，但是外界针对迪士尼和这部影片的几位主演，特别是扎克本人，关于片酬难以达成一致的传言却一直不曾消散。有报道说好莱坞内部的人士认为迪士尼试图在08年的好莱坞编剧大罢工和演员大罢工之前就和主要演员签订协议，扎克应该要求得到高达5百万美元的片酬才会接演《毕业季》，对于这样的传言扎克不予置评。
整个影片的预算为1300万美元，用了40天的拍摄周期，这在青春片市场中已经算得上是大制作了。影片于2008年1月进入前期制作阶段，2月份在美国犹他州的盐湖城开机。在影片正式开机前，主创们在盐湖城的东部高中举办了一次媒体见面会作为开机仪式。幸运的是，剧本在好莱坞编剧大罢工之前已经定稿，这样影片在大罢工活动正酣时就已经进入了音乐的制作阶段。影片最终定于2008年10月24日、万圣节前一周与美国观众在大银幕上见面。导演肯尼表示，这将是上两部的主要演员们最后一次聚齐在《歌舞青春》中，因为随着剧情的发展，他们都要“毕业”了。
从荧屏走向银幕
在美国，《歌舞青春》系列被冠上了“新美国甜心”、“青春神话”等等一系列的名号，学生们称它为“HSM”，俨然已经成为了一个新的流行词汇。据统计，这部影片在已经被超过4.5亿人观看过，相当于全球十五分之一的人都曾经观看了这部影片的某一集。对于一部青春片、而且仅是迪士尼频道的电视电影来说，这几乎是一个奇迹。由影片带动的衍生商品的销量更是惊人，DVD的发行量超过1500万，电影原声音乐的发行量1300万，还有1000万的主题音乐会的票房收入。这一切都发生在这两部电视电影身上，确实有些不可思议。现在的《歌舞青春》已经不再只是一部系列电影的名字，而成为了迪士尼公司一个每年都创造出极大收益的著名品牌。
在去年《歌舞青春2》的收视率再破迪士尼频道的记录之后，迪斯尼公司终于肯定第三集已经准备好进入大银幕了。“他们终于有了一个商业上的决定而不是艺术上的决定。”制作人比尔·伯顿这样评价，事实上，在他制作《歌舞青春》和《歌舞青春2》的时候，他都曾经试图说服公司让影片进入院线发行。而导演肯尼·奥特加还考虑过要把《歌舞青春3》变成3D电影，“但很可惜我没有得到任何热情的回应。”尽管没有实现3D电影的想法，《歌舞青春3》要上大银幕的消息还是给它的众多年轻粉丝带来了极大的喜悦。“我们的优势在于我们知道谁是我们的观众，”迪士尼的制作总监奥然·艾威（Oren Aviv）这样说，“他们对于这部影片非常地狂热、非常地忠实。”
新鲜血液与主演的难忘经历
在影片开拍前，迪士尼公司为《歌舞青春3》增加的几个新角色在美国、加拿大和英国展开了一场声势浩大的选角活动，成千上万的年轻人参加了这次试镜。最终有三个幸运儿脱颖而出，其中就包括英国的电视明星简玛·麦肯兹-布朗。在英国已经小有成就的她回忆起自己在听到入选了《歌舞青春3》时的情景，“我尖叫着跑出了房子，我奶奶着急地问我到底发生了什么事，我说没事没事，我就是太激动了。”她在影片中扮演一个从英国来的转学生，并且在东部高中成为了莎佩的私人助理。简玛承认当她第一次进入剧组，和其中已经成为明星的主演们共同工作时感到有些紧张，但是他们友好的态度很快就消除了她的这种心情。“他们对我们这几个新来的非常照顾，很快就把我们纳入他们的团队，如果拍完了戏他们在其中某个人的房间里聊天，也会特意给我们打电话或是发短信叫我们一起去。”到现在，简玛还是认为能够加入到这个团队中去是她一生中难得的好运气。导演肯尼对于简玛和其他几个新成员的评价也非常高，认为他们给剧组注入了新鲜的血液。
